Job summary

University of Virginia is seeking a Descendent Program Assistant to support the partnership with the Descendants of Enslaved Communities (DEC). The role involves assisting with descendant research, outreach, and coordinating programming, including Memorial to Enslaved Laborers events, under supervision of the DEC leadership and UVA researchers.

The position is located in Charlottesville, VA, requires progress toward a BA, and prioritizes experience in history, genealogy, and community

Qualifications

• Developing knowledge in Charlottesville/Albemarle County Black history and enslaved UVA history.
• Experience in U.S. history research projects is preferred.
• Excellent written/verbal communication and the ability to work with diverse communities.

Responsibilities

• Assist Descendant researcher in curating findings and data for DEC and reporting.
• Coordinate MEL tours scheduling and management.
• Update DEC website information; produce newsletters and social media updates.
• Support programming related to the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers.
