Job description

Georgia Power Company utilizes Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) software for the management and control of the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as photovoltaic / solar, wind, and other forms of generation on the electric grid. The DERMS Engineer / Analyst role will support the Grid and Edge DERMS currently being deployed at Georgia Power Company.

This position will support integration of Grid and Edge DERMS into other platforms in the IT Enterprise and OT domains as well as developing dashboards to complement and summarize DERMS data for users. The role will also test and troubleshoot DERMS results, including Forecasting, Optimization, and aggregated monitoring and controls, to ensure model inputs and operational outputs are accurate, traceable, and fit for operational use. In addition, this position will support model build, model maintenance, model improvement, and model governance across GIS, SCADA, ADMS, DERMS Model Manager, and related enterprise systems. The successful candidate will improve the quality, completeness, and operational usability of the model by identifying gaps, reconciling data across source systems, querying databases, testing interfaces, and coordinating changes with engineering, operations, IT/OT, and vendor teams. The DERMS model will be built from GIS, substation internals, customer data, asset management data, DER attribution, customer program contractual parameters, interconnection agreement information, SCADA telemetry, and other operational data sources required to support DERMS functionality.

This role will initially follow a hybrid work schedule, with four days per week (Monday – Thursday) at the office located at 241 Ralph McGill.

Responsibilities
  • Support integration between DERMS, ADMS, GIS, SCADA, AMI, CIS, DER registration/interconnection systems, customer program systems, and vendor applications.
  • Test and troubleshoot DERMS results for Forecasting, Optimization, and aggregated monitoring and controls by validating model inputs, topology, telemetry, DER attributes, constraints, and business-rule assumptions.
  • Create model test cases, user acceptance test scripts, regression checks, issue logs, and defect documentation for vendor and internal team resolution.
  • Partner with distribution planning, distribution operations, engineering, IT/OT, DER program teams, and vendors to resolve model defects and improve operational outcomes.
  • Support DERMS model build processes that convert data files and source-system extracts, including CIM, XML, JSON, GIS exports, SCADA point data, asset data, customer data, DER attributes, and program parameters into the network operations model.
  • Maintain and improve DERMS model readiness by identifying missing equipment, topology issues, phase/connectivity errors, stale attributes, telemetry mismatches, DER attribution gaps, and customer/program data discrepancies.
  • Coordinate model improvements in GIS, SCADA, ADMS, DERMS Model Manager, asset management systems, customer systems, and other systems that supply or consume the operational model.
  • Query databases and source-system repositories to validate model data, reconcile mismatches, investigate defects, support reporting, and document the lineage of model attributes used by DERMS.
Develop and maintain repeatable workflows for model quality checks, data cleansing, version control, model promotion, exception tracking, and operational handoff.
  • Support ADMS and DERMS Model Manager integration, model governance, process documentation, and long-term network operations modeling support.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and recommendations for model data standards, model maintenance procedures, interface improvements, and operational reporting.
  • Participate in storm restoration support, application support rotation as needed, and post-event model or application troubleshooting.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

  • Strong understanding of electric distribution systems, network connectivity, phase relationships, feeders, substations, protective devices, transformers, DER interconnection, and operational model dependencies.
  • Experience with GIS, SCADA, ADMS, DERMS, model management systems, asset data, customer systems, or other systems used to build and maintain operations models.
  • Ability to analyze, reconcile, and improve data across source systems, including GIS, SCADA, AMI, CIS, asset management, DER registration, and customer program repositories.
  • Working knowledge of database querying using SQL or equivalent query languages; ability to join datasets, validate source records, inspect model outputs, and troubleshoot data quality issues.
  • Experience with data exchange formats such as CIM, XML, JSON, CSV, geospatial extracts, equipment lists, and telemetry mapping files.
  • Ability to test and troubleshoot DERMS analytical outputs for Forecasting, Optimization, and aggregated monitoring and controls by validating topology, telemetry, constraints, customer/program settings, and DER attributes.
  • Strong communication, analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate model issues into actionable engineering and system corrections.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, distribution operations, IT/OT, data governance, vendors, and business stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Embodies Southern Company values: Safety First, Unquestionable Trust, Superior Performance, and Total Commitment.
