Job summary

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is seeking applicants for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position, who will participate in a POST-approved basic law enforcement training program. Trainees learn to interpret state codes and local ordinances, and to perform basic criminal and traffic investigations, crime scene preservation, and evidence collection.

They will acquire firearms safety, vehicle and radio operation skills, patrol procedures, and civil procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED/H.E.T.) required.
  • Pass a rigorous background investigation.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Valid California driver license (Class C) or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to interpret and apply California Penal, Vehicle, Welfare and Institutions Codes and local ordinances.
  • Learn basic criminal and traffic investigation procedures, crime scene preservation, and evidence collection.

Job description

The San Bernardino CountySheriff's Department is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff Trainee who participate in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Sheriff's Trainees will:
  • Learn to interpret and apply laws contained in various state codes and local ordinances (e.g., Penal, Vehicle, Welfare and Institutions Code as well as Health and Safety Codes).
  • Learn and practice basic criminal and traffic accident investigation procedures; learn law enforcement techniques, including crime scene preservation, witness interviewing and evidence collection.
  • Learn and practice safety, care and usage of small firearms and department-issued weapons.
  • Learn vehicle and radio operation, patrol procedures and traffic control.
  • Learn civil procedures and custodial responsibilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Promotion: Incumbents are expected to successfully complete the Training Academy. Upon graduation, Sheriff's Trainees will be promoted to Deputy Sheriff, which has a current salary of $38.77 - $64.08 hourly, plus benefits and retirement plan.

Applicants who have tested for Deputy Sheriff Trainee within the past six (6) months are not eligible to apply for this recruitment.

The following are required for hire as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee:

  1. Be at least 21 years of age. (Applicants should be at least 20.5 years of age at time of testing.)
  2. Possess a high school diploma, G.E.D., or a U.S. Department of Education approved High School Equivalency Test.
  3. Possess a valid California Class C driver license or equivalent.
  4. Be a United States citizen.
  5. Pass a rigorous physical agility test based on California P.O.S.T. standards.
  6. Be fingerprinted and pass an extensive background investigation that includes interviews and a polygraph examination. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any type of criminal probation.
  7. Pass a psychological evaluation and medical examination meeting California P.O.S.T. mandates, including vision and hearing standards. (The medical examination includes a drug screening to determine the presence of illegal substances.)
