Job description

The work involves responsibility for the application of sound managerial command principles and practices in the assignment of subordinate Deputy Sheriff personnel to the operation of a maximum security holding facility. The focus of this position is assuring compliance with all policies and procedures to the inmate population in resolving problems and deploying staff to insure the safety and security of inmates, staff and the public. An employee in this class is allowed considerable leeway for the exercise of judgment and action consistent with the responsibility for an entire watch or special unit. This responsibility does not encompass the total operation of the facility, therefore, the degree of independent action is not as great as found at higher levels within the Custody series. Supervision is received from a Deputy Sheriff Captain (Custody) or higher ranking superior orally or in writing allowing for independent action in implementation. Performance is reviewed through conference, observation, submission of written, oral and electronic reports and includes participation in staff meetings to research, develop, implement and evaluate methodology to improve operation of the Division. Direct supervision may be exercised over a substantial number of subordinate sworn personnel dependent upon assignment. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Supervises subordinate Deputy Sheriff personnel to ensure that duties are performed in accordance with legal and departmental procedures by means of personal observation and inspection, through oral review during informal meetings, and by reading narrative reports written by subordinates to evaluate facts, course of action taken and the rationale for decisions made.

Makes rounds of assigned locations, such as housing pods, program/service areas, or courtrooms to determine whether inmates are secure and that Deputy Sheriff personnel are patrolling their posts according to procedure.

Resolves inmate problems, inquiries and complaints that subordinate staff are without authority to rectify or unable to resolve.

Meets with subordinate Deputy Sheriff Sergeants (Custody) as needed to discuss how work is progressing, issues and problems and from the input gathered from these meetings, makes recommendations for policy and procedure changes.

Evaluates subordinates work activity, requiring interaction with supervised staff on a continuing basis to insure their awareness of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations to insure consistent application to the inmate population.

Holds roll call, makes inspections, reads new directives, assigns posts, prepares work schedules and arranges leave time for subordinates.

Coordinates work activities with other units, sections, divisions, departments or other governmental agencies.

Required to work a significant amount of overtime throughout the year.

May act as incident commander during a disturbance or other emergency situation.

May confer with supervisory and administrative staff to decide the disciplinary action to impose upon inmates who breach justice center rules and regulations.

May be involved in the management of various administrative functions such as budget preparation, civilian support supervision, inmate grievance and disciplinary hearings, coordinating and instructing recruit training supervision.

May be responsible to prepare written narrative documents describing the facts and course of action taken during a disturbance in a cell, pod or other serious problem.

May be Division Watch Commander.

May perform all duties of subordinates.
