Job summary

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a full-time detention position located in Blount County, TN. The role focuses on care and safe handling of inmates, security of the facility, and adherence to state and federal laws and department policies.

Beginning salary is effective July 1, 2026, with a range of $51,940–$54,537 per year. Applicants must meet detailed requirements and pass a physical, background, and PT tests as part of the process.

Qualifications

• Be between ages 18 and 60 to meet TCI and TCRS requirements.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Possess a state approved G.E.D. (certificate) or high school diploma.
• Not have been convicted of a felony or related disqualifying offenses.
• Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
• Must have passed the National Police Officer Selection Test.
• Must be certified under Tennessee Correctional Institutes' rules within the first year of employment.
• Must pass a physical examination.
• Must have good moral character after a thorough investigation.
• Must be certified under P.O.S.T. requirements as established in Tennessee Codes Annotated.

Responsibilities

• Serve warrants and court processes on inmates.
• Maintain and supervise inmates in a controlled humane environment and assist with meals and medications.
• Interact with the public by phone and in person regarding correctional matters.
• Assist in inmate counts and complete appropriate reporting.
• Control and monitor inmate movement to ensure security and safety.
• Direct inmate work crews to ensure proper completion of tasks.
• Intervene in and control disruptive behavior to maintain security.
• Conduct visual surveillance to detect suspicious activity and ensure safety.
• Inspect entry points and personal property for proper authorization.
• Write incident and disciplinary reports as required.
• Operate Sheriff’s Office vehicles for transport and operations.
• Provide basic first-aid and life-saving services including CPR.
• Performs related work as required.
