Job summary

Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando seeks a certified Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Court Security Division. Duties include maintaining security and decorum in courthouses, responding to emergencies, assisting with evacuations, and manning security posts at main and employee entrances.

Candidates must be Florida Certified or currently attending a Florida academy, be at least 20 years old, a U.S. citizen, fluent in English, and possess a high school diploma or GED.

An individual in this position is a Deputy Sheriff for the Orange County Sheriff's Office and must meet all criteria required of that position (See Deputy Sheriff - Patrol job posting). In addition, they are assigned specialized duties in the Court Security Division as follows:

This position requires a certified Deputy Sheriff to maintain security and decorum within the various courts of the judicial system and to support the needs of jurors assigned to court functions. The Deputy responds to emergencies within the courthouse, assists with building evacuations as necessary, and operates security posts at the main and employee entrances.

• Must be Florida Certified or Currently Attending a Florida Law Enforcement Officer Academy:
  • Florida Certified (vested with authority to bear arms and make arrests): Must have successfully completed the Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification or Equivalency of Training from a Florida law enforcement academy and a passing score on the Florida law enforcement officer certification exam.
  • Currently Attending an Academy: Must be currently attending a Florida law enforcement officer academy. Must obtain passing score on the state law enforcement officer certification exam prior to receiving a conditional offer.
• Good verifiable work history.
• Accredited high school or GED diploma. (Will not accept a certificate of completion.)
• Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
• At least 20 years of age.
• U.S. Citizen.
• Valid driver's license for the last year.
• Must have a valid Florida driver's license prior to being hired.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony.
• Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.
• Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces.
• No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
• Good physical condition.
• Ability to establish and maintain relationship with attorneys, judges, and citizens on matters related to criminal actions or other court and legal proceedings.
• Ability to verify courtrooms, holding cells, jury rooms, and judge’s chambers are searched for contraband.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, other law enforcement agencies, tourists, business partners, and the public.
• Must have proficient communication skills (i.e verbal and nonverbal) and public speaking ability to present to diverse group size and population (i.e age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, socio-economic level, etc.).
• Must have proficient interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain working relationships with the internal and external stakeholders.
• Must be able to interact with fellow employees, other agencies, and the public in a manner which represents the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in a positive manner.
• Ability to effectively work in collaboration with other units inside and outside of the agency to present information and respond to questions from other law enforcement agencies, community partners business partners, and the public.
• Must possess knowledge of various resources available from other law enforcement agencies.
• Must have the ability to use audio-visual equipment.
• Must have effective organizational and administrative skills with the ability to work and manage multiple assignments a the same time, prioritize information appropriately and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Must possess basic mathematical skills (i.e. add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals).
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and to read and distinguish the order of numbers.
• Must have basic computer skills to include word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
• Must have the ability to maintain electronic files and use the internet effectively to research information.
• The mental requirements described in the deputy sheriff job description are representative but not inclusive of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Must demonstrate proficient knowledge and understanding of current laws, investigative procedures and policies of the OCSO, search warrants, arrest warrants, Enforce County Ordinances, Traffic and Criminal laws of the State of Florida.

Physical Demands:

• Cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot through various terrains (i.e. up/down stairs, around buildings, on city streets, through or in between natural barriers such as water, trees, bushes, etc., or a combination of these, etc.).
• Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations including physical fighting with subjects and/or re-directing them to the ground.
