Proficiency advancement to the rank of Deputy Sheriff Corporal requires an overall satisfactory rating on the employee's last performance planning and appraisal report and requires successfully passing a written proficiency examination.
Graduation from high school; two (2) continuous years of experience as an Anne Arundel County Deputy Sheriff and one (1) continuous year of experience as an Anne Arundel County Deputy Sheriff First Class; or three (3) continuous years of experience as a Deputy Sheriff in the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office including the attainment of the rank of Deputy Sheriff First Class; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator’s license.
Deputies who will achieve the required time in their current classification of Deputy Sheriff First Class by April 24, 2027, are eligible to take the October 2026 proficiency advancement examination for Deputy Sheriff Corporal.
There will be two (2) testing sessions: Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Testing will take place in the Office of Personnel, 2660 Riva Road, Annapolis, Maryland. Candidates will be required to self-schedule for one of the testing dates and times. Candidates will have until Friday, October 16, 2026, at 4:30 pm to schedule for the exam.
A review session has been scheduled at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, immediately following the written exam, in the Office of Personnel. Candidates will have two (2) hours for the test review. Information on review session procedures will be provided in further correspondence with candidates.

Deputies are responsible for ensuring they use the correctly dated revision of each General Order. The Only acceptable study materials are located in PowerDMS.
