Job description

Our client is a rapidly growing healthcare technology company transforming how health benefits are administered through modern technology, greater transparency, and an integrated approach to pharmacy and medical benefits. The company works across the healthcare ecosystem, including employers, health plans, TPAs, unions, and other organizations, and is building technology and infrastructure designed to make healthcare benefits more efficient and effective. As part of its continued growth and expansion, the company is adding a Deputy General Counsel to its Legal team. This is a newly created leadership position offering the opportunity to help shape the next phase of a growing legal function, partner closely with the General Counsel and executive leadership, and build the processes, capabilities, and team infrastructure needed to support a growing healthcare business. The successful candidate will combine strong healthcare legal expertise and commercial judgment with demonstrated experience leading people and managing an in‑house legal function. This is an opportunity for an experienced in‑house attorney who can operate as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while helping establish scalable legal operations, develop talent, improve workflows, and ensure the Legal team delivers timely, practical, business‑oriented advice. The Deputy General Counsel will work across a broad range of legal, regulatory, commercial, and operational matters, with responsibility for helping lead the day‑to‑day effectiveness of the Legal team. The role will involve advising on complex healthcare and commercial issues, overseeing legal resources and outside counsel, strengthening risk management and matter prioritization, and implementing processes and technology that enable the function to scale effectively. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable navigating substantive legal issues, coaching and developing attorneys, and driving improvements in how a legal department operates. Candidates must have prior in‑house legal experience, knowledge of the healthcare sector, and experience managing direct reports. Prior experience as a Deputy General Counsel is not required; the company is interested in candidates with the judgment, leadership capability, and breadth of experience to step into this level of responsibility.

  • Compensation: Base salary: $266K–$335K annually; eligible for a 30% cash bonus and equity opportunities through a program that allows employees to purchase restricted stock units (RSUs), subject to applicable terms.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with the General Counsel and executive leadership on legal department strategy, priorities, resource needs, and significant legal and business risks.
  • Lead and develop attorneys and legal professionals, establishing clear responsibilities, performance expectations, coaching practices, and accountability.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day Legal team operations, including matter intake, prioritization, workload allocation, escalation protocols, and delivery of legal services across the business.
  • Build and improve legal department processes, operating standards, workflows, reporting mechanisms, and performance metrics to support growth and scalable service delivery.
  • Evaluate and implement legal technology, workflow automation, AI‑enabled tools, matter management systems, and contract lifecycle management processes, with appropriate governance, confidentiality, and quality controls.
  • Manage outside counsel relationships, legal expenditures, budgeting, and resource allocation, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and maximize the value of internal and external legal resources.
  • Establish consistent frameworks for legal risk assessment, matter management, escalation, and reporting, maintaining appropriate oversight of significant litigation, regulatory inquiries, investigations, contractual disputes, and other material matters.
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on commercial contracting, pharmacy benefit management, pharmacy services, pharmaceutical manufacturer relationships, pharmacy network arrangements, and strategic partnerships.
  • Advise on applicable federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, including Medicare Part D, Medicaid, pharmacy reimbursement, drug pricing, healthcare fraud and abuse, and other requirements relevant to the business.
  • Lead or coordinate legal support for complex commercial negotiations, new business initiatives, strategic transactions, and significant regulatory matters.
  • Develop contracting standards, templates, playbooks, approval authorities, and escalation procedures that enable efficient business execution while appropriately managing legal and regulatory risk.
  • Partner with Compliance, Risk, Finance, Human Resources, Privacy, Information Security, Operations, and other business stakeholders to address enterprise risks, clarify responsibilities, and improve cross‑functional decision‑making.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen team capabilities, knowledge sharing, talent development, and organizational effectiveness as the Legal function continues to grow.
Required Qualifications
