Job description

The City of Kalamazoo is seeking a Deputy City Manager. The Deputy City Manager is responsible for supporting the City Manager in implementing the organization’s mission, including the strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects and activities within the City, and for ensuring that internal and external operations are efficient and effective. This position serves as Acting City Manager if the City Manager and Chief Operating Officer are unavailable.

The ideal candidate will possess a broad range of skills and abilities, demonstrating a generalist approach rather than specializing in a single area. They will be a visionary leader with a strong commitment to accountability, transparency, and integrity, consistently upholding high ethical standards. The candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively and positively with the public and individuals at all organizational levels. They will be skilled at building consensus around difficult topics while balancing competing public and political views and priorities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong sense of urgency, effectively prioritize tasks, maintain high energy, respond to opportunities, motivate others to act with urgency, and consistently meet deadlines. They will also have experience preparing comprehensive municipal reports, developing budgets, negotiating, conducting data analyses and project evaluations, managing projects, and formulating policy recommendations. Additionally, they will possess strong organizational and multitasking skills.
