Job summary

City of Springdale seeks a qualified attorney to prosecute misdemeanors, draft legal documents, and advise city officials on rights, obligations, and procedures under applicable laws. Job description

The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the City Attorney and performs a variety of technical and professional work primarily in the area of prosecuting crimes, drafting legal documents, advising city officials as to legal rights, obligations, practices and other related phases of applicable local, state, or federal law.

Safety/Security Sensitive Designation

This position is classified as safety/security sensitive under the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment and is therefore subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Job Duties
  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers; maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  • Prosecute all misdemeanors or violations on behalf of the City of Springdale.
  • Provide professional advice to city employees, as directed by the City Attorney.
  • Issue written and oral opinions.
  • Adjust errors and complaints within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Gather evidence in criminal cases for prosecution.
  • Conduct research, interview witnesses, victims of crime, and handle other details in preparation for trial.
  • Prepare legal briefings; develop strategy and argument in preparation for presentation in court.
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for City officials and staff in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Attend public meetings at the request of the City Attorney.
  • Perform other City legal work as assigned by the City Attorney.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and have no felony convictions; General knowledge of State statutes relating to criminal offenses, criminal law, criminal procedure, and traffic law.
  • Be licensed to practice law within the State of Arkansas.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain at the time of hiring a valid state driver's license, which is not suspended or revoked.
  • Frequent use of personal computer, including internet research, word processing program and spreadsheet; cell phone, calculator, telephone, copy machine, and fax machine.
  • Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, City officials, the court system and the general public.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions
  • Possess good judgment, good powers of observation and memory.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of city, county, state and federal laws making decisions.
  • Must possess excellent social skills in dealing with people using a pleasant and friendly professional demeanor.
  • Skill in preparing briefs and other legal documents.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive legal documents and carry out assigned projects to their completion.
  • Must be self-motivated.
Supplemental Information

Must successfully pass criminal background check, including but not limited to convictions, guilty pleas, or no contest pleas to violent offenses, theft offenses, and offenses against children.

Must be able to pass FBI criminal background fingerprint check and have the ability to comply with state and federal requirements for criminal justice information security standards and obtain necessary certifications.
