Job description

SLAC is operated by Stanford University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science and is one of 17 DOE national laboratories - the most comprehensive research system of its kind in the world, providing strategic scientific and technological capabilities and expertise that cannot be found elsewhere. A major part of the Office of Science mission is supporting the development, construction, and operation of unique, open-access scientific user facilities. The laboratory is home to three Office of Science user facilities: the Linac Coherent Light Source, the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource and the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests.

SLAC sits on 426 acres of Stanford land, located two miles from the main university campus. The lab’s ties with Stanford have grown over the years to include several joint institutes and facilities and many collaborative research efforts. Stanford has made numerous investments in the laboratory and provides key services that make its operations more efficient. SLAC also plays a key role for Stanford, which benefits from the lab’s deep expertise in key areas and its ability to develop and run large-scale research facilities. Together with Stanford, SLAC educates and develops the U.S. scientific workforce in key technological areas.

Position overview

Provides support to the Deputy Laboratory Directory for Operations and Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the leadership, development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, and operational responsibilities. Partners with the programmatic areas of the laboratory to advance world class operations support of the scientific mission of the laboratory. Responsible for engaging stakeholders, defining requirements, and implementing assigned laboratory-wide programs.Acts on behalf of the Deputy Laboratory Directory and COO in their absence and is a delegate for authorized approvals.

Provides strategic budget support for the COO’s approval that efficiently and effectively delivers the services that are needed and align with the SLAC mission. Provides support in regard to development of initiatives and encourages innovation and continuous improvement throughout the laboratory complex. Develops and maintains relationships with Department of Energy, Stanford University, and various other stakeholders in the formulation of crosscutting programs, initiatives, and solutions. Possesses the ability to listen and consult with a wide range of stakeholders and recognize and resolve operational issues of the Laboratory through multi-disciplinary teams that crosscut the Laboratory. Supports and helps advocate talent management strategies that advance a diverse and inclusive workforce. The successful candidate will also need to be able to uphold and demonstrate SLAC’s Core values: Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Respect, Creativity, on a daily basis.

Your specific responsibilities include
  • Provide strategic leadership and management of administrative and operational functionsexercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions. Achieve goals through managerial staff; typically have multiple levels of professional and supervisory staff.
  • Oversee the management of areas of responsibility. Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
  • Provide strategic direction for multiple areas of business; create strategic plans of considerable complexity and scope; set long range direction and make high level decisions; propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic change; establish policies as needed.
  • Make decisions for programs that provide critical support services for the Laboratory. Oversee allocation of all assigned resources.
  • Set the direction of an organization and direct the policy development and implementation of administrative operations and workforce planning.
  • Evaluate the performance of the organization and develop plans accordingly. Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization. Responsible for committing resources with limited review by senior management.
  • Advise executive management on programmatic and policy development. Negotiate and influence Laboratory leaders on issues that have Lab-wide impact.
