The role of an EMT / AEMT is to provide emergency medical care and transportation for individuals who are sick or injured before they reach a hospital. Paramedics are expected to promote a safety-first culture, delivering top-quality patient care and customer service, in accordance with the policies, procedures, and performance standards of Vital Medical Transport, as well as state regulations and accepted standards of care.

In this position, you will respond to areas affected by natural disasters, public health emergencies, and other crises, supporting both State and Federal Disaster responses. Candidates may be deployed within the continental United States, its territories, and international locations.

This position is based on an on-call, as-needed employment model. Candidates must be available to deploy within 48 hours of notification for a minimum of fourteen (14) days. Conditions during deployments may vary depending on the resources available.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Uphold patient confidentiality and manage the release of information responsibly.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations established by the state.
  • Ensure the proper use of medical equipment, treatment procedures, record-keeping, and protocols.
  • Prepare and administer all narcotics and medications at the appropriate dosages, completing all associated paperwork for replacements.
  • Ensure patient safety during extrication by accessing and moving patients appropriately while using protective equipment. Choose the quickest route to the patient, keeping both their safety and the safety of EMS personnel in mind, and prepare them for transport according to approved protocols.
  • Wear protective gear and minimize contact with bodily fluids. Report exposure incidents and manage contaminated equipment according to established procedures.
  • Follow disaster response plans during multi-casualty incidents and involve hazardous materials response personnel when necessary. Maintain clear communication with EMS, hospital staff, and family members using radios or phones.
  • Maintain clear and concise communication with EMS personnel, hospital staff, and medical personnel using two-way radios or telephones. Establish rapport with the families of patients and bystanders.
  • Operate the mobile medical unit in accordance with state law and established procedures for parking and maneuvering at the scene of emergencies. Determine the shortest route to the scene and proceed accordingly. Inspect and test ambulances and their emergency equipment, completing logs and forms to ensure that everything is in proper working order and adequately stocked with supplies. Make minor adjustments as needed and report any issues beyond minor defects for specialized attention.
  • Maintain cleanliness and perform minor maintenance tasks at the Emergency Medical Services facility.
  • Deploy to disaster-affected areas within the United States and its territories, with potential opportunities for international assignments.
  • Provide emergency medical care and support during disasters.
  • Operate in field hospitals, delivering medical care in temporary setups and supporting ongoing patient treatment and care.
  • Collaborate with other response teams and agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective disaster response.
  • Adapt to rapidly changing environments and work conditions, maintaining a high standard of care under pressure.

Requirements:

SKILLS/EDUCATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent communication skills. Experience interacting with community groups or forums.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction.
  • Required Education and Experience
  • A combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Two years emergency response experience.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Current EMT/AEMT Certification
  • Driver's License
  • CPR certification
  • US Citizen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Hazmat Awareness
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800
  • Passport preferred

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful candidate must submit and pass a post offer, pre-employment physical examination, drug test and criminal background check
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening
  • Work within the Vital Medical Transport Compliance Program
  • Maintain all certifications and licenses throughout employment

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work in all environments.
  • Position involves working in stressful situations at times. Must be able to maintain calm and reassure parties that may be hostile, ill, scared or suicidal.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must have functional hearing and vision.

EQUIPMENT AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Employees will receive orientation and ongoing education in areas like adult learning, clinical care, critical thinking, customer service, and emergency medical resources. Annual training on medical, trauma, and behavioral emergencies, as well as equipment for patient assessment and transport, is mandatory.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment is high-risk, involving indoor and outdoor tasks in various weather conditions, including during disasters and mass casualty events. Personnel may face diverse medical conditions and emotional states while operating emergency vehicles, like ambulances.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Employees must assist with patient movements using an ambulance stretcher (up to 250 pounds with a partner) and perform various physical tasks, including walking, crawling, and kneeling. They should be able to carry patients and equipment over different distances and terrains and transport the EKG monitor and jump bag unassisted.
