Job summary

South Dakota State University in Brookings invites applications for Professor and Department Head in the Department of Construction & Concrete Industry Management. The appointee will be a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty member who works closely with the Dean and the leadership team of the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering to advance the department’s academic programs, research, and outreach.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate by the application date.
  • Record of achievement in academic leadership, teaching, scholarship, research, and service.
  • Financial management experience including revenue, expenditures, and budgeting.
  • Experience in academic administration and/or private industry.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, strategy, and vision for the department and its programs in collaboration with faculty, staff, and other college and university administrators, advancing SDState’s Pathway to Premier strategic plan.
  • Advance the department in all components of its mission: education and student advisement, research/creative activities, and industry and community engagement.
  • Supervise curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation activities through program and assessment coordinators and faculty collaboration.
  • Create a supportive environment for faculty, graduate and undergraduate student research and extramural funding.
  • Recruit, mentor, develop, evaluate, and retain faculty, staff, and students.
  • Manage and assign faculty workload and plan student throughput through course scheduling.
  • Advocate for the needs of the department’s programs, faculty, students, and staff.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets and coordinate fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee management and maintenance of departmental facilities and resources.
  • Maintain an active program of teaching, research, and/or scholarship consistent with the rank of Professor for the agreed upon workload percentage.

The Department of Construction and Concrete Industry Management at South Dakota State University invites applicants for the position of Professor and Department Head. The selected candidate will be a 12‑month, full‑time, benefits‑eligible, tenure‑track faculty member who works closely with the Dean and the leadership team of the Jerome J. Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field by the application date.
  • A record of achievement in academic leadership, teaching, scholarship, research, and service commensurate with the performance expectations for a tenured full professor in the department.
  • Financial management experience including revenue, expenditures, and/or budgeting.
  • Experience in academic administration and/or parallel experience in the private industry sector.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience at the middle manager level or higher within the construction or concrete industry management sector.
  • Experience with recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of current and emerging trends in the construction and concrete industries, including rapidly changing workforce needs and their implications for interdisciplinary education and research.
  • Experience implementing administrative policies.
  • Experience building relationships with regional industry leaders that led to collaboration.
  • Experience leading and managing ABET and other programmatic accreditation procedures.
