Job Summary

The Department Head of Interdisciplinary Studies provides strategic leadership for Interdisciplinary courses and related initiatives, including curriculum development and instructor recruitment. Collaborating with faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and campus partners, the department head fosters an engaging environment for Interdisciplinary Studies students and ensures academic excellence. The department head combines the roles of administrator and faculty member, serves multiple constituencies, and has the authority and responsibility for:

• Delivery of academic programs in accordance with departmental, college and university strategic plans
• Hiring and evaluation of department personnel, to include faculty and staff
• Budgeting and resource management.

This authority is subject to approval by the Dean and the Provost. As a member of the College administration and reporting to the Dean, the Department Head coordinates departmental activity with the activities of other units in the College and the University and, in collaboration with other members of the administration, assists in the development and implementation of college initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Leadership
  • The academic department head is the chief academic and administrative officer for the department, and is accountable and responsible to the Dean of the College for:
  • Aligning the department's mission and future goals with those of the College and University;
  • Maintaining the academic quality and vitality of the department's programs;

  • Supporting each university campus with courses, faculty and staff, and resource allocations commensurate with department, college, and university priorities;

    Recruiting and retaining faculty, students, and staff consonant with the department's mission and goals in alignment with the University's strategy to dynamically differentiate and innovate;

  • Engaging in shared governance by involving faculty and other relevant constituents in broad decision making and planning through ongoing consultations;
  • Embodying the highest ethical standards in the role of academic leader, including responding tolerantly, patiently, and open-mindedly; and
  • Promoting morale and departmental cohesiveness.
• Departmental Management
  • The academic department head efficiently, effectively, and transparently:
  • Balances work and project assignments by leveraging faculty strengths to meet the needs of the department, College, and University while supporting growth and addressing areas for improvement;
  • Coordinates the scheduling of departmental course offerings that supports students¿ needs toward their academic progression and completion;
  • Coordinates curricular proposals and curricular assessments;
  • Manages the department budget;
  • Ensures ongoing assessment of the department's success in fulfilling its mission, reaching its goals, and maintaining the program accreditation where applicable;
  • Implements Board of Regents, University System of Georgia, University, College, and department policies;
  • Supervises faculty, staff, and student personnel within the department;
  • Manages departmental equipment, technology, and physical facilities;
  • Serves as an advocate, both inside and outside the University, for the department's and faculty's perspective, concerns, and needs, including those of the students it serves;
  • Ensures department-specific internal and external materials and communications are up-to-date, accurate, and aligned to university strategic communications.
  • Communicates information regarding policies, procedures, decisions, and relevant activities and events to all departmental constituencies;
  • Works collegially and collaboratively with other department heads, the Dean of the College, and other campus personnel; and
  • Ensures smooth daily operation of the department.
• Professional Development
  • The academic department head is a faculty administrator who:
  • Undertakes teaching, research, scholarly and/or creative activities, as appropriate to the department's mission and allowed by the duties entailed by their departmental leadership position;
  • Promotes quality teaching and attentive and accurate advising by department faculty/staff;
  • Reviews and recommends changes in the annual projection of workload activities by faculty/staff;
  • Conducts effective annual performance evaluations of faculty and staff, and communicates the results of those evaluations;
  • Actively mentors staff members through professional development/growth opportunities; and
  • Actively mentors faculty members through and beyond the tenure and promotion processes, building a culture of leadership and quality instruction.
• Faculty Responsibilities
  • Undertake teaching, research, and scholarship activities appropriate to the department's mission, and as allowed by duties entailed in leadership; and
  • Teach four sections of IDST courses per year.

Required Qualifications

• Earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
• A record of leadership experience, including curriculum and/or program design, in higher education.
• Credentials required for appointment as a tenured associate or full professor in a department/college at the University of North Georgia.
