Job summary

Spartanburg Community College invites applications for the Department Chair to lead Humanities and Language courses, teach a diverse student body, and develop course materials. The role includes recommending new programs, maintaining office hours, and participating in college and community activities.

The candidate will supervise faculty (full-time and part-time), manage scheduling and budgeting, and promote institutional goals while supporting student advising and retention initiatives.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree w/ at least 18 hours in one of the disciplines housed in Humanities and Languages (English, Art, Music, Spanish, Theater, Religion, Philosophy, or American Sign Language). Seven years of teaching experience at the collegiate level.
• Master's Degree in Humanities, or a Master's Degree in one of the disciplines housed in Humanities and Languages (English, Art, Music, Spanish, Theater, Religion, Philosophy, or American Sign Language). Seven years of teaching experience at the collegiate level.

Responsibilities

• The ability to present course materials through appropriate instructional strategies to facilitate the learning process.
• The development, revision, and maintenance of courses and curriculum through course objectives, outlines, and appropriate materials.
• The effective use of required office hours, exhibition of effective classroom management and control, and timely and accurately submitted reports.
• The participation of the faculty member, when applicable, in assisting students in personal and professional development.
• The participation in college and community service activities that promote the institution, along with ongoing professional development efforts designed to maintain and enhance skills, knowledge, and effectiveness in the position.
• The demonstration of effective planning, coordinating, and operating the department through scheduling and evaluating courses and instructors (full-time and part-time), budgeting, using advisory committees where applicable, and other duties necessary to maintain a quality instructional program.

Job description

To serve as Department Chair, and teach Humanities and Language courses to a diverse student body using effective teaching strategies; develop, revise, and maintain course materials; recommend/design new programs; maintain office hours; participate in appropriate professional development opportunities; participate in College and community activities, promote the mission of the College; develop/implement retention strategies; assist in graduate placement; attend graduation ceremony; assist with student advising and registration; serve on College committees; promote institutional goals; assist with departmental administrative responsibilities. Teaching may be on any campus or by distance learning, and may be days, nights, weekends, or a combination.

TEACHING PERFORMANCE

The ability to present course materials through appropriate instructional strategies to facilitate the learning process.

INSTRUCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The development, revision, and maintenance of courses and curriculum through course objectives, outlines, and appropriate materials.

INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT
