Job summary

GEO Corrections & Detentions is seeking a licensed dentist to provide and supervise the dental care of facility detainees. This on-site role requires adherence to accreditation standards and collaboration with the facility medical team.

The position is a part-time, independent contractor role (20 hours/week) offering malpractice coverage and no health insurance barriers, with responsibilities spanning screenings, treatment planning, routine procedures, and health record documentation.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a degree in dentistry from an accredited dental school.
  • Licensed to practice as a dentist in the state where the facility is located.
  • Ability to interact effectively with detainees and staff in a correctional setting.
  • Comfort adjusting medical techniques to accommodate security considerations.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates and maintains compliance with accreditation policies.
  • Performs initial dental screenings within seven days of new commitments.
  • Assess and plan treatment, taking impressions and coordinating with outside labs.
  • Develops individual treatment plans after exams.
  • Performs routine dental procedures and educates patients on oral health.

Responsibilities

Summary:

The Dentist provides and supervises the complete dental care of facility detainees/inmates. Evaluates and seeks improvement in the facility dental health program, dental services provided, patient care required/administered, dental operative conditions and equipment in use. Functions as a consultant to the facility staff physician.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Dentist initiates and maintains compliance with company policies for accreditation.
  • The Dentist completes an initial dental screening on all new commitments within seven (7) days.
  • Evaluates those patients needing or applying for dental care and makes recommendations deemed clinically appropriate. Takes impressions for dental plates. Sends prostheses to outside dental labs.
  • The Dentist formulates and create treatment plans on an individual basis after a thorough exam.
  • Performs routine cleaning, drilling, filling, and extraction of teeth in accordance with National Commission for Correctional Health Care Standards for dental care.
  • The Dentist educates patients on maintaining proper oral health and prevention.
  • Teaches patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care.
  • The Dentist prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented dental conditions and regularly reviews those cases requiring ongoing medical/pharmaceutical attention.
  • Produces clear and concise health records, reports and correspondence, including the use of Electronic Health Records system
  • The Dentist monitors need for dental supplies and equipment.
  • Provides in-service training for health staff members on appropriate issues, such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques.
  • The Dentist supervises the work of professional, technical and administrative Provides input into performance evaluation.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and comply with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
  • The Dentist collaborates and communicates effectively with the Hospital medical team, Psychiatric, Mental Health Professionals, Nurses, Health Technicians and Administrative Assistants.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops/seminars/conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • The Dentist maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Performs other various duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in dentistry from an accredited dental school Licensed to practice as a registered dentist in the state in which the facility is located is required.
  • Professional license must remain on file at all times at the facility where services are rendered.
  • Must be able to deal effectively with difficult detainees/inmates and staff at times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adjust medical techniques to accommodate the needs of the specialized population of the correctional setting. This includes communication between medical staff and detention staff about the care of detainees while understanding and adjusting for the unique security issues of the facility.
