Job summary

Rockingham County Public Health Department seeks a dentist to deliver comprehensive dental care in the county clinic. You will perform treatments, educate patients, and participate in community dental health initiatives as assigned.

The role may involve supervising dental assistants and collaborating with the Dentist III on management duties. A North Carolina dental license and DEA certification are required.

General Definition of Work

Work in this class involves independent professional dental services in the Rockingham County Public Health Department dental clinic. Employees provide comprehensive dental treatment and participate in community dental health initiatives and program activities as assigned. This position may provide guidance to dental assistants assigned to the position and assist with operational or management duties delegated by the Dentist III. Work is guided by established dental health practices and is performed under the administrative supervision of the Dentist III (who may have a working title of Dental Health Director/Administrator).

Examples of Duties

• Provides dental treatment to patients (major functional element) to put fillings, sealants, extract teeth, perform root canal treatments, prepare dentures, crowns, space maintainers, perform surgeries, etc.
• Coordinates local dental health projects; directs and participates in dental examinations of school age children; promotes dental health programs in public schools.
• Maintains records of dental patients and treatment by documenting procedures, reviewing health histories, and ensuring accuracy of clinical documentation.
• Provides diagnosis and dental education to patients.
• Evaluates dental conditions and radiographs, concludes diagnosis, and provides related health information to patients and communicates with specialists.
• Supervises and directs the work of dental assistants assigned to the position and delegates duties related to preparing operatory, sterilization, chairside treatment, and assigs tasks for clinical function and performs other related duties as assigned.
• Participates in meetings, consultation, and mentoring activities with dental staff and assists the Dentist III with management duties as assigned.

• Ability to prepare and deliver lectures on dental health education to professional and community groups.

Physical Activities, Visual Acuity, and Working Conditions for this Position

• Balancing - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium
• Stooping - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles
• Reaching - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
• Standing - Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time
• Walking - Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another
• Pushing - Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward
• Lifting - Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles

• Repetitive Motions- Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an approved school of dentistry.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Licensed by the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina at the time of hire with two or more years experience as a Dentist.

License or Certification Requirements:

• Dental License

• CPR & AED Certified
• Valid NC Driver's License.
