Responsibilities and Duties
  • The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers

  • Functions of Assigned Duties: The General Dentistry dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services
  • Specifically—the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following: conduct oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity and provide interpretation of imaging; review medical history and apply knowledge to patient management
  • Diagnoses pathological or irregular oral conditions
  • Performs treatment planning—including multi-step, complex plans—with input from specialists as needed
  • Administers local anesthesia and nitrous oxide
  • Performs routine and complex restoration of teeth
  • Performs routine extractions and other surgical procedures within the scope of a general dentist
  • Performs prosthetic dentistry, including immediate dentures, full and partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work
  • Performs routine dental implant restorations
  • Performs routine endodontic procedures on single and multi‑canal teeth
  • Performs routine periodontal procedures
