Job Description

Position Summary

Dental assistants play a vital role in enhancing the efficiency of dentists in delivering quality oral health care. They assist in providing direct patient care across various dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery. Responsibilities include assisting the dentist, setting up and maintaining equipment, and preparing patients for treatment from start to finish of their appointment.

Essential Functions

To succeed in this role, individuals must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  1. Prepare patients for dental procedures, ensuring they feel comfortable before, during, and after treatment.
  2. Manage patient flow efficiently.
  3. Set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist the dentist during procedures.
  4. Take and expose dental diagnostic x-rays, ensuring proper care and guidelines for x-ray sensors.
  5. Record medical and dental histories and vital signs.
  6. Chart treatments in Patient Management Software.
  7. Assist the dentist with medical or dental procedures.
  8. Provide preoperative explanations and postoperative instructions as prescribed.
  9. Document treatment information and fabricate temporary restorations or impressions.
  10. Prepare study casts and occlusal registrations, and manage whitening trays and removable appliances.
  11. Apply fluoride treatments and educate patients on oral hygiene.
  12. Ensure proper patient dismissal and handoffs to other departments.
  13. Sterilize and disinfect instruments and operatories.
  14. May serve as the Clinical Inventory Administrator, managing supplies and budgets.
  15. May act as the Compliance and Safety Officer, conducting tests, maintaining safety documentation, and training staff.
  16. Adhere to all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations, including OSHA and HIPAA.
  17. Be willing to relocate as needed and perform administrative or maintenance tasks as assigned.
  18. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Skills & Abilities

  • Completion of a Dental Assisting Program or at least one year of experience.
  • Current Dental Assisting Permit, CPR Certification, and X-Ray Certification.
  • Proficiency in Eaglesoft, Microsoft Office, and understanding of sterilization and infection control protocols.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance if operating company vehicles.
  • Knowledge of CDT codes and specific dental procedures.
  • Ability to comply with vaccination requirements and understand patient privacy and safety standards.
