Job description

Summary:
The dental assistant reports to the Clinical Dental Supervisor of Samuels Sinclair Dental Center and/or its Practice Manager/Director. Under the clinical supervision of staff dentists, they follow established policies and procedures to assist dentists and dental hygienists. The dental center provides care to adult, intellectually disabled, pediatric, and medically compromised patients.

Responsibilities:

  1. Review scheduled procedures and prepare the dental unit by setting up instruments, materials, and supplies.
  2. Update and review signed and dated medical histories of patients. Take and monitor vital signs when indicated before and during treatment. Prepare patients for treatment, including draping, positioning, and placing protective devices.
  3. Explain procedures to patients and answer questions to alleviate fears. Provide instructions on proper dental hygiene, post-surgery care, and denture care.
  4. Perform sealants to prevent decay.
  5. Fabricate custom trays and record bases, pour and trim study models, and fabricate night guards or stints. Process laboratory shipments and receipts.
  6. Assist dentists and hygienists with various dental and oral surgical procedures, including restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgery, periodontic, and endodontic procedures. Pass instruments and materials, manage suction, and apply and hold retractors for proper exposure of the treatment site, following established four-handed dentistry procedures.
  7. Chart existing restorations and missing teeth. Discharge patients and provide follow-up instructions.
  8. Serve as liaison between group homes/parents and the clinic for patient scheduling.
  9. Clean treatment areas, laboratories, and equipment after procedures. Sterilize instruments and maintain equipment such as suction hoses, autoclaves, and other dental and laboratory tools.
  10. Maintain inventory of dental supplies. Use computer systems to record charges and manage appointments, including DNK (Do Not Keep) appointments.
  11. Perform routine clerical duties such as record keeping, taking phone messages, scheduling, and confirming patient visits.
  12. Perform other related duties as required.

Other Information:

Basic Knowledge:

  • Completion of an approved Dental Assistant program and certification by the Dental Assisting National Board Inc., OR
  • 3500 hours of approved work experience and x-ray certification from an accredited program.

Knowledge of dental assisting, including familiarity with four-handed dentistry, instruments, and equipment used across various dental specialties, as well as radiographic and laboratory procedures.

Demonstrated clerical skills, ability to operate office equipment, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with diverse populations, including patients with special needs.

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS). Must pass the Dental Assisting National Board within three months of hire.

Experience:

General dental assisting experience plus three to six months on-the-job experience to familiarize with department procedures.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work in clinical and operating room settings with infection control protocols.
  • Minimal exposure to radiation and dental materials.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing during procedures.
  • Participation in behavior and physical management of uncooperative patients to ensure safety.

Independent Action: Performs duties independently within department policies, consulting supervision for complex issues.
