Job summary

Manhattan–Staten Island Area Health Education Center (MSI AHEC) in New York seeks a Dental Assistant to support dentists in clinics and health care settings under direct supervision. Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent with accredited dental assistant program and 600 hours internship.
  • HS diploma or equivalent with dental assistant program and 300 hours internship plus 6 months full-time chairside experience.
  • HS diploma with 1 year full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing chairside duties.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the above. At least a four-year HS diploma or educational equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment.
  • Assist dentists by handing instruments during procedures.
  • Sterilize instruments, disinfect surfaces, and maintain hygienic clinic conditions.
  • Prepare examination rooms for procedures.
  • Take and upload dental digital imaging.
  • Mix amalgams, cements, and composites.
  • Perform basic laboratory tasks such as pouring models.
  • Maintain patient and instrument records.
  • Ensure clinic equipment is functional.
  • Report shortages and repairs of equipment.
  • Assist with patient management and scheduling.

Job description

1. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 600 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; or
2. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent, including or supplemented by successful completion of an accredited or approved Dental Assistant Program, which included or was supplemented by 300 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside; and 6 (six) months of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing all of the following duties: taking and uploading dental digital imaging, assisting dentist at chairside, and preparing dental instruments for sterilization; or
3. A four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as a Dental Assistant performing the duties described in “2” above; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. Each 100 hours of supervised internship experience assisting a dentist at chairside is equivalent to two (2) months of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year High School diploma or its educational equivalent.
Experience as a receptionist or clerk in a dentist’s office is not acceptable towards meeting the qualification requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:

Under direct supervision, assists dentists in providing dental services to patients in clinics and health care settings; performs related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

  1. 1. Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
  2. 2. Assists dentists by handing them required instruments for the treatment of patients.
  3. 3. Prepares instruments for sterilization, disinfects surface areas, and maintains clinic and clinic equipment in a hygienic condition, in accordance with infection control procedures.
  4. 4. Prepares examination room for procedures.
  5. 5. Takes and uploads dental digital imaging.
  6. 6. Mixes amalgams, cements, composites and related materials.
  7. 7. Performs laboratory procedures, such as pouring and packaging models from impressions for prosthetics.
  8. 8. Maintains records of patients, instruments and models.
  9. 9. Maintains clinic equipment to ensure that it is in working order.
  10. 10. Reports shortages in supplies and material and necessary equipment repairs.
  11. 11. Assists dentist in patient management; interacts with patients and the public.
  12. 12. Schedules patient appointments; enters and retrieves data and information into computerized systems.
