Job description

About Shepherd Electric Supply

Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through.

Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place.

Why This Role Matters

Every branch that opens ready to serve customers in the morning is ready because of a run that happened in the dark. When a contractor walks into a branch at 7 a.m. and the material they need is on the shelf, it is because a transfer driver moved it there overnight. That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing. At Shepherd, transfer drivers are the connective tissue of the branch network. While the rest of the company sleeps, you keep material moving between our locations so every branch starts the day stocked, staged, and ready to keep its promises. You carry Shepherd's reliability from one building to the next on every run.

How This Role Connects To Our Compass

We Keep Our Promises: You move complete, correct transfers on time so branches open stocked and no morning crew is left waiting. If a run is at risk, you communicate early — not after the branch opens short.

We Stay Hungry: You know your routes cold, stay sharp on DOT compliance, and look for ways to make long overnight runs safer and more efficient. You ask questions, take feedback, and bring problems forward so they get solved.

We Grow Together: Your customers are the other branches and the teams inside them. Your on-time transfers and clean handoffs set the whole network up to succeed. You make their morning easier, not harder.

We Own It: You take responsibility for your load, your vehicle, and your run — including at 2 a.m. when no one is watching. Pre-trip inspections are done right, not skipped. If there is a discrepancy or a problem on the road, you call it in — you do not hope it resolves itself.

We Go Above & Beyond: You stage inbound material so the receiving branch's morning crew can hit the ground running. You flag anything that could become a problem before it does, and you leave every truck ready for the next driver.

Key Outcomes

Organized by what matters, not just what you do.

Transfer & Transportation
  • Operate transfer trucks — tractor-trailer and box/flatbed (manual and automatic transmission) — on assigned inter-branch routes across the Shepherd network
  • Move electrical materials accurately and on time between Shepherd branches and distribution points
  • Verify transfer manifests and load accuracy before departure and document any discrepancies immediately
  • Communicate proactively with dispatch and receiving branches if a transfer is at risk of delay
Vehicle Operation & Safety
  • Complete thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections every shift — no shortcuts
  • Operate equipment safely and in full compliance with DOT regulations and Shepherd safety standards
  • Report mechanical issues, equipment needs, or safety concerns to leadership without delay
  • Maintain current CDL Class A license, DOT certification, and medical certification at all times
Warehouse & Load Support
  • Assist with loading and unloading, including wrapping pallets and staging freight for transfer
  • Stage inbound material at the receiving branch so the morning crew can start ready
  • Work with warehouse teams on both ends to ensure transfer loads are built and verified correctly before they leave the building
Network Coordination
  • Coordinate with dispatch and receiving-branch personnel professionally at every stop — your handoff is their morning
  • Communicate ETAs, delays, and load status clearly and on time
  • Represent Shepherd professionally at any customer or job-site stops your route includes
  • Flag discrepancies, feedback, or concerns to your Manager the same shift they occur
What Success Looks Like

After 90 days, you and your Manager should both be able to point to these markers:

  • Transfer runs are completed on time and loads arrive complete and correct — recurring errors or missed stops are rare
  • Pre-trip and post-trip inspections are completed every shift without prompting
  • Discrepancies are documented and communicated the shift they occur — not discovered by the morning crew
  • Receiving branches consistently open stocked and staged because your runs land on time
  • Vehicle is returned in the condition it left — fueled, clean, and ready for the next run
  • Warehouse teams on both ends trust that loads you help build or stage are right before they move
Who Thrives Here

This role is a strong fit if:

  • You take safety seriously — every pre-trip, every run, not just when someone is watching
  • You work well independently overnight and hold your standards without a supervisor over your shoulder
  • You communicate problems early, not after they become the morning crew's problem
  • You take pride in how you represent the company at every branch and every stop
  • You are reliable — the network knows they can count on your run to land
  • You treat every branch you deliver to as part of your team
  • You understand that a late or short transfer is not just a logistics problem — it is a branch that opens unable to keep its promise
Qualifications & Requirements
  • CDL Class A license required
  • Current DOT and Medical Certification cards required
  • Minimum 3 years of driving experience with a clean motor vehicle record
  • Ability to operate tractor-trailer with manual transmission
  • Knowledge of air brake systems
  • Comfortable working overnight/night-shift hours and driving independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. regularly and perform the physical requirements of the role
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Forklift certification preferred or ability to obtain through onsite training
  • Available for schedule adjustments as business needs require
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • Strong verbal communication skills — you relay information clearly and on time
  • Familiarity with the region and inter-branch routes preferred
