WIC Lake County is hiring a Degreed Nutritionist to provide nutrition counseling to WIC participants in Lake County, CA, traveling to clinic sites as needed. This part-time role emphasizes compliance with state and federal requirements and delivering staff trainings on nutrition.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics or related field.
  • Two years of experience in community nutrition including services to pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum women and children 0-5 years.
  • Shall complete 50 continuing education units that are equivalent to those allowable for and RD or DTR.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and/or other language ability based on program needs preferred.

SCHEDULE: Part-Time

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides nutritional counseling to WIC participants following Professional, State and Federal requirements. Provide in-service training for Program staff regarding nutrition. Follow all WIC Program Regulations and Agency policies to accomplish Program and Agency goals and objectives. Travel to clinic sites within Lake County, out of area conferences and training.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Services (60%)
  • Assesses initial participant information, screen for eligibility, create a file, schedule appointments, assess paperwork for completeness, issues benefits, and educate participants on the appropriate foods package.
  • Collects and evaluate anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary data to determine nutrition and / or health risks.
  • Determines eligibility, complete certification process following federal and state program regulations.
  • Assesses need for and provide referrals and follow up to health care providers, public health nurses and other agencies as needed.
  • Assesses need for and issues benefits for medically indicated formula and foods according to State and local policies and procedures. Support medical nutrition therapy provided to the participant.
  • Acts as a resource for other staff and conduct quality monitoring activities for appropriate and accurate nutrition assessment, counseling, and referrals.
  • Travels to satellite WIC clinics to provide full scope of WIC services to eligible Lake County residents.
  • Supports the Agency Safety Program.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.
Nutrition Education (20%)
  • Conducts health, nutrition and breastfeeding contacts for prenatal and postpartum women, infants, and children.
  • Provides moderate-risk level nutrition counseling, documentation in participant file with indication of future follow-up.
  • Follows high-risk care plans and agency protocols in counseling high-risk participants.
  • Plans and provides participant-centered individual and group nutrition and breastfeeding education contacts.
  • Attends various meetings, trainings, committees, and conferences related to program goals and objectives.
  • Provides staff nutrition or participant-centered training.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.
Breast Feeding Education and Support (20%)
  • Provides breastfeeding support, education, and counseling to WIC participants and families.
  • Regularly works in a manner that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding. Encourages breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding.
  • Provides individual breastfeeding consultations in person or on the telephone as appropriate.
  • Networks with other health professionals and community organizations to promote and support breastfeeding in the community.
  • Attends conferences and professional educational trainings as authorized. Encouraged to become a Certified Lactation Education or Counselor.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Attends staff meetings, State sponsored conferences and professional educational trainings as authorized.
  • Participates in outreach activities.
  • Researches, prepares and presents nutrition education training for staff or special projects as requested.
  • Communicates with community organization to promote healthy eating, ensure access to healthy food, and provide healthy living activities for WIC participants.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position classification.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelors of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics or related field.
  • Prefer two years of experience in community nutrition including services to pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum women and children 0-5 years.
  • Shall complete 50 continuing education units that are equivalent to those allowable for and RD or DTR.
  • Bilingual, bi-literate, English/Spanish, English/Punjabi, English/Hmong, and/ or other language ability based on program needs preferred.
  • State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis test, and verified fingerprint and criminal records clearance before beginning work.
  • Possession of a valid drivers’ license; current personal vehicle insurance or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of participants, employees of the organization, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to understand and use a variety of computer applications and appropriate software, spreadsheets and word processing, such as Microsoft Office and workplace electronic technology, including access, networking, and e-mail.
  • Advanced personal computer skills including ability to design and develop data bases; create computerized presentation/ training materials; and use advanced graphics design applications is desired.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in various forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables where on limited standardization exists.
