Job summary

Hornblower Group seeks a Deckhand to maintain vessel appearance, guest comfort and safety while underway, and assist with docking and undocking. The role emphasizes superb guest service and clear communication.

The candidate should be able to lift 50 pounds, work nights, weekends and holidays, and possess strong customer service and teamwork skills. High School Diploma preferred; CPR/First Aid a plus. Training on RESPECT service system provided.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to work extended periods without sitting.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • First Aid/CPR certification a plus, not required.
  • Strong customer service, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in the RESPECT SERVICE SYSTEM.
  • Follow safety procedures to protect passengers and vessel.
  • Participate in routine safety drills for major incidents (man overboard, fire, abandon ship).
  • Handle lines to moor vessels to pier.
  • Stand watch to observe navigation aids and obstructions.
  • Assist with maintaining vessel equipment and systems (HVAC, engine).
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of all common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, and wash decks and exterior to remove dirt and debris.
  • Load or unload materials from vessels; remove trash.
  • Service, clean, and stock restrooms.
  • Be prepared to begin work at scheduled times.
  • Maintain uniform and grooming per appearance standards.
  • Conduct safety patrols while vessel is underway.
  • Communicate with passengers and respond to questions/complaints.
  • Assist with boarding and disembarking passengers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Summary:

The successful Deckhand is responsible for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel, ensuring guest comfort and safety while underway, and assisting with docking and undocking. This position has superb guest service & communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in the RESPECT SERVICE SYSTEM.
  • Follow safety procedures to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel.
  • Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents including man overboard, fire and abandon ship.
  • Handle lines to moor vessels to pier.
  • Stand watch in ships’ bows, sterns, or bridge wings to look for obstructions in a ship’s path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
  • Assist Captain and supervisory personnel in maintaining vessel equipment and systems such as HVAC, engine, and technical equipment.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, and wash down decks and exterior to remove dirt and debris using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses.
  • Load or unload materials from vessels; gather and remove trash from vessel.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time.
  • Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
  • Performs security/safety patrols of all decks while vessel is underway.
  • Communicates with passengers, answering questions and responding to complaints.
  • Assists with boarding and disembarking of passengers.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred.
  • Will work for extended periods of time without sitting.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED Certification a plus but not required.
  • Strong customer service, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain a high level of organization, detailed oriented and meet deadlines.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by job responsibility.
  • Listen effectively, assess the situation, determine relevant issues, & suggest solutions.
  • Have a working knowledge of computer skills, including but not limited to proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to coworkers and guests.
  • Maintainuniformandpersonalgroomingincompliancewithappearancestandards.
  • Will be required to be available for work nights, weekends and on all major holidays.
