Job summary

Holliday Sand & Gravel Company, a CRH company, is recruiting a Deckhand/Bank Laborer to support river operations, docking, and tow safety. You will work with the river crew to assist with boat handling, rigging inspection, and safe passage through locks while following USCG/MSHA safety rules.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous marine deckhand or water-based mining experience preferred.
  • Must be 18 years or older and able to pass pre-employment checks including physical, drug screen, and background.
  • Valid driver’s license meeting state requirements.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
  • Willingness to travel and work nights/weekends when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Manage docking operations, secure lines, inspect and maintain barges and rigging for safe tow operations.
  • Champion workplace safety following company and USCG/MSHA guidelines.
  • Wear PPE and follow emergency procedures across designated areas.
  • Communicate with crew via radio, signals, or verbally to coordinate tasks.
  • Maintain boat and barge; report issues and keep equipment in good condition.
  • Monitor daily production rates and report challenges to leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expertly manage docking operations, secure lines, inspect and maintain barges and rigging to ensure safe and efficient tows.
  • Champion workplace safety for yourself and your team, following all company and USCG/MSHA guidelines.
  • Wear proper PPE and understand emergency procedures for all designated areas, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Take directions from the River Foreperson and collaborate daily with crew and wheelhouse personnel.
  • Develop your skills as a tow boat pilot in training; assist with deckline handling, navigation, and safe passage through locks.
  • Communicate clearly with all team members—by radio, signals, or verbally—to coordinate tasks and solve problems fast.
  • Maintain the boat and barge, reporting issues promptly and keeping equipment in top shape.
  • Monitor and report daily production rates and any challenges to leadership.
  • Display professionalism and courtesy when interacting with crew, supervisors, and the public.
  • Show reliable attendance and flexibility to meet the demands of the job.
  • Contribute to a culture of teamwork, stepping up to assist with additional duties as needed.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Frequently required to climb, balance, and perform tasks involving physical agility.
  • Regularly sit, climb, and use hand signals or equipment; occasionally stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, or reach above shoulder height.
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 25-50 lbs as needed.
  • Work primarily outdoors, often in extreme weather and environmental conditions.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions; exposed to jobsite hazards such as moving machinery, high places, airborne particles, and loud environments.
