Summary Description

The Dean of Nursing is responsible for the judicious growth, planning, implementation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of all instruction and related program management activities in the Division of Nursing (DON). The DON currently houses a Christ-centered, traditional, upper division BSN Degree program that is grounded in the liberal arts and educates diverse students with aspirations for professional nursing practice. This position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Primary Job Duties

• Align with, embrace, and promote the mission, vision, values, and core themes of Warner Pacific University.
• Demonstrate a commitment to a Christ-centered liberal arts education by upholding the mission of the university and abiding by its Employment Standards and Lifestyle Agreement. Warner Pacific is affiliated with the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana).
• Contribute to the support and implementation of the Strategic Plan of Warner Pacific University and its infrastructure through service on committees and councils and attendance at associated meetings.
• Support and adhere to Warner Pacific University policies and procedures.
• Exhibit commitment to inclusiveness, sensitivity, and accessibility in areas of national origin, ethnicity, culture, gender, and disabilities.
• Ensure ongoing program compliance with all Oregon State Board of Nursing approval rules and CCNE accreditation standards.
• Lead, mentor, and collaborate with faculty in curriculum revision per AACN’s 2021 Essentials and ongoing evaluation in accordance with University governance, the Oregon State Board of Nursing, and the CCNE.
• Participate in recruitment, selection, and ongoing development of program faculty and support staff.
• Recommend nursing faculty members for appointment, promotion, and retention.
• Oversee the work of the DON Program Manager for assigned roles, especially to ensure acquisition and evaluation of appropriate clinical placement sites to meet program outcomes.
• Demonstrate effective management of the program’s fiscal and physical resources including program budget development, delegation of projects to support staff, resolution of grievances and appeals, and investigation of approaches that promote all to flourish under intentional leadership.
• Participate in the selection of qualified applicants for admission to the program within the OSBN’s cohort caps.
• Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and proficiency in use of technology.
• Demonstrate leadership skills evidenced by involvement with professional associations and organizations.
• Support and maintain institutional relationships with external approval, accrediting, and regulatory agencies.
• Support and maintain institutional relationships with local, state, and national professional nursing organizations.
• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, with all members of the university community and outside constituents.
• Perform robust evaluation and assessment measures by required deadlines to ensure program effectiveness evidenced by educational outcomes.
• Maintain teaching and advising workload per the Faculty Handbook.
• Be present in the office on a daily basis unless arrangements are made with the employee’s direct supervisor.
• Participate in Warner Pacific University professional development opportunities.
• Perform other duties as negotiated.

Minimum Qualifications

• The Dean of Nursing must hold an earned doctorate degree or qualify under current OSBN exceptions: The OSBN representative may grant exceptions to nurse administrator appointments for any of the following circumstances:
  • (a) The education and experience qualifications are deemed equivalent to the requirements; or,
  • (b) The appointed individual is pursuing the needed qualifications. Reports on progress toward meeting the minimum qualifications must be provided as requested by the Board representative; or,
  • (c) The individual without full qualification is appointed for one year. The exception may be extended annually for a maximum of two times, with documentation of either continued and unsuccessful recruitment for a qualified replacement, or a plan to establish eligibility under exception (b) above.
• Have the equivalent of a minimum of five years of full-time nursing experience to include:
  • A minimum of two years must be in patient care at the registered nurse level; and
  • A minimum of three of these years must be in a Nurse Educator or administrative position in an academic nursing education program.
• Hold an unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse License (required).

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD Degree in Nursing or DNP Degree.
• Depth and breadth of professional experience in the field, to include: approval and accreditation processes for BSN Degree Programs and knowledge of healthcare delivery in the greater Portland area.
• Experience working with diverse populations.

Physical Demands – Work Environment

The position is located in a combination office, classroom, skills laboratory, and simulation laboratory environment. Professional/business casual attire or scrubs is required. This position routinely requires standing, walking, lifting equipment and supplies, moving task trainers and simulators, setting up patient care environments, and operating simulation technologies.
