Position:Day Camp Counselor - YMCA Camp Chandler
Location: Wetumpka, AL
Job Id:344
# of Openings:1
The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for the daily care, safety, and engagement of campers throughout each day of Camp Chandler's Day Camp program. Working under the supervision of the Day Camp Director and reporting directly to the Camp Director, the Day Camp Counselor helps ensure that every camper feels welcomed, valued, and cared for from the moment they arrive to the moment they head home. Though campers come and go each day, the impact a counselor has on them doesn't — a Day Camp Counselor's kindness and consistency can be the best part of a camper's whole day.
Supervise and care for an assigned group of campers throughout the camp day, from arrival to dismissal.
Build genuine, caring relationships with each camper, taking time to know them and make them feel seen and included.
Lead campers with kindness, patience, and consistency, modeling the behavior and character Camp Chandler hopes to instill.
Ride the morning and/or afternoon bus as assigned, supervising campers during transportation to and from camp.
Lead and participate in daily activities, games, and theme-based programming alongside your camper group.
Address homesickness, conflict, and emotional needs with compassion and a calm, steady presence.
Maintain camper safety and accountability at all times, including during transitions, activities, meals, and bus duty.
Communicate openly and respectfully with fellow counselors, the Day Camp Director, and camp staff to ensure a smooth camper experience.
Report any camper concerns — physical, emotional, or behavioral — to the Day Camp Director promptly.
Encourage campers to try new things, step outside their comfort zone, and support one another within the group.
Help maintain appropriate camper-to-staff ratios and supervision at all times.
Uphold all YMCA and Camp Chandler policies and procedures related to camper safety, supervision, and staff conduct.
Serve as a positive role model, reflecting Camp Chandler's values of caring, honesty, respect, faith, and responsibility in words and actions.
Complete additional camper-care and program responsibilities as assigned by the Day Camp Director or Camp Director.
The Day Camp Counselor should be patient, dependable, and genuinely invested in the well-being of every camper in their care. This individual should understand that leading campers well starts with caring for them well — showing up with kindness, humility, and a servant's heart, even on the busiest days.
The Day Camp Counselor is a non-residential summer staff position and does not stay overnight at Camp Chandler. This position requires reliable attendance, including punctuality for morning arrival and/or bus duty as assigned, and the flexibility to adapt to each day's schedule, activities, and camper needs.
Above all, the Day Camp Counselor should recognize that even a single day at camp can be a meaningful, memorable one for a child — and should treat that opportunity with care.
