Job description

The Camp Counselor at Camp Osprey Day Camp will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of their specific group at the YMCA of Southern Maine. The incumbent will possess experience and knowledge in the areas of camp counseling, administration skills, youth leadership skills and development, public relations, and experience working with children 5-14 years old.

School Break Dates: February 16th- 20th and April 20th-24th.

Summer Dates: June 8th-August 21st

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to a large-group program which is consistent with the YMCA mission, goals, and objectives of the YMCA of Southern Maine.
  • Conduct a safe, quality, and age-appropriate large group camp experience for your group.
  • Be responsible during staff training and staff meetings to become completely familiar with the camping goals, programs, camp personnel policies, safety procedures, skills and protocol necessary to accomplish the specified position.
  • Plan, organize, and implement a quality program for all campers.
  • Participate in general planning and staff meetings.
  • Be responsible for the health and safety of each camper.
  • Be a positive adult role model for campers through good work habits, enthusiasm, good attitude, adherence to camp personnel policies, and safety rules.
  • Assist each camper in adjusting to the camp environment and allow him/her to grow in individual achievements and peer group interactions.
  • Assist in camp assemblies, family nights, all-camp activities, overnights, and special events as assigned by the Camp Coordinator.
  • Keep group & programs areas safe, clean, and orderly.
  • Complete session evaluations and season evaluations as requested by the Camp Director.
  • Commit and fulfill all duties stated and any other duty as assigned by the Camp Director.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance records of campers and immediately report all absences to the Camp Director.
  • Immediately report all behavioral problems to the Camp Director. Document all incidents and communicate with Camp Director so they can contact families.
  • Is an advocate to the Y by promoting our cause. Assists with the annual campaign by increasing awareness about the campaign within the Y community.
  • Adheres to all Y Brand guidelines and receives prior approval for use and creation of any Y related social medic from the Marketing department.
  • Learn and actively utilize UKG Employee Portal on a consistent basis.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Copy of necessary certifications and/or training certificates.
  • Previous Junior Counselor or equivalent experience.
  • Experience, knowledge, and ability to teach, and supervise campers in a variety of camp program activities.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • A Criminal Background check is required, including fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire. This will be paid for by the YMCA of Southern Maine.
  • A clean record as determined through criminal background check and fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
