Job summary

Fts Inc. is seeking an experienced Database Engineer/DBA to manage and optimize production SQL Server environments in Arlington, VA. You will drive performance improvements, ensure high availability, and lead cloud migration efforts to AWS services such as RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL.

The role requires 4+ years in database engineering or DBA work, strong SQL/T-SQL/PL/pgSQL knowledge, and comfort with scripting and data security practices. On-call rotations and compliance support are included.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of database engineering or DBA experience.
• Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server in a production environment.
• Experience with SQL Server performance tuning, Always On or similar HA/DR, backups, recovery, and security.
• Strong knowledge of SQL, T-SQL, and PL/pgSQL.
• Experience moving databases between platforms or into the cloud.
• Experience with PowerShell, Python, or Bash scripting.

Responsibilities

• Manage and monitor production Microsoft SQL Server databases.
• Improve database performance by working with indexes, queries, statistics, and connections.
• Manage backups, restores, replication, and high availability.
• Test backup and recovery processes to ensure databases can be restored.
• Move databases to AWS, including Amazon RDS for SQL Server and/or Aurora PostgreSQL.
• Migrate data and support production cutovers.
• Convert T-SQL, stored procedures, and triggers to PostgreSQL when needed.
• Work with PostgreSQL databases, including tuning, replication, and extensions.
• Protect sensitive data through encryption, access controls, key management, and auditing.
• Review database changes and SQL queries from engineering teams.
• Help engineers build databases that are reliable and perform well.
• Create scripts and automation for database setup, migrations, maintenance, and monitoring.
• Support PCI-DSS and SOC 2 compliance.
• Participate in on-call support and help resolve database issues.

• Four-year technical degree, or equivalent work experience.
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and able to pass a background check.

Preferred

• Experience with Amazon RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS DMS, or Babelfish.
• Experience with change data capture (CDC) and data pipelines.
• Experience with multi-tenant databases and tenant data separation.
• Experience in financial services or other regulated industries.
• Knowledge of PCI-DSS or SOC 2.
• Experience with Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Experience with Databricks or data warehouse platforms.
