Job summary

The Phoenix Group is seeking an experienced Database Administrator specializing in Azure SQL to ensure high availability, security, and performance of enterprise data assets. You will optimize queries, manage resources, and implement governance across Azure SQL Database and Managed Instance.

Applicants should have 5+ years in DBA roles, deep T-SQL skills, and hands-on experience with ADF, automation scripting, and Azure security controls.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator, with at least 3 years focused natively on Microsoft Azure data services.
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server.
  • Proven track record building and optimizing enterprise-level pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF).
  • Advanced T-SQL skills (writing/tuning complex queries, stored procedures, triggers, and views).
  • Experience with automation scripts using Azure Native tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, diagnose, and resolve performance bottlenecks across Azure SQL Databases and Managed Instances.
  • Optimize complex queries, indexing strategies, execution plans, and database configurations.
  • Review table designs, stored procedures, views, and other database objects for performance optimization and security.
  • Implement proactive resource management (DTU/vCore scaling) to balance high performance with cloud cost-efficiency.
  • Continually evaluate data growth rates and develop capacity plans for future needs.
  • Manage backup/recovery strategies, geo-replication, and failover groups to guarantee strict RPO and RTO objectives.
  • Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.

Job description

  • Monitor, diagnose, and resolve performance bottlenecks across Azure SQL Databases and Managed Instances.
  • Optimize complex queries, indexing strategies, execution plans, and database configurations.
  • Review table designs, stored procedures, views, and other database objects for performance optimization and security.
  • Implement proactive resource management (DTU/vCore scaling) to balance high performance with cloud cost-efficiency.
  • Continually evaluate data growth rates and develop capacity plans for future needs.
Core Enterprise Data Maintenance & Governance
  • Ensure the absolute integrity, availability, and security of the organization's core enterprise data domains.
  • Collaborate with data governance teams to implement data quality checks, schema validation, and deduplication processes.
  • Manage data lifecycle strategies, including archiving and partitioning strategies for large-scale digital datasets.
Data Integration & Orchestration (ADF)
  • Design, develop, and maintain robust data integration pipelines using cloud native tools and services.
  • Optimize ADF pipeline performance, monitoring execution times, and troubleshooting failures or data drift.
  • Manage CI/CD deployments for database schemas and ADF pipelines across development, staging, and production environments.
High Availability, Security & Compliance
  • Manage backup/recovery strategies, geo-replication, and failover groups to guarantee strict RPO and RTO objectives.
  • Implement and enforce data security policies, including Azure Active Directory integration, Row-Level Security, Data Masking, and encryption at rest/in transit.
  • Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.
Qualifications & Skills
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator, with at least 3 years focused natively on Microsoft Azure data services
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server
  • Proven track record building and optimizing enterprise-level pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF)
  • Advanced T‑SQL skills (writing/tuning complex queries, stored procedures, triggers, and views)
  • Experience with automation scripts using Azure Native tooling
Preferred (Nice-to-Have)
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview or other Core Enterprise Data Management tooling
  • Familiarity with Azure Synapse Analytics or Databricks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and PowerBI
  • Familiarity with Datadog or other observability platforms
