Job Summary

Our Revenue Compliance platforms process tax, business license, and property tax data for government agencies across the country. The databases behind those platforms are the system of record; when they are slow, unavailable, or incorrect, our customers cannot collect revenue.

The Database Administrator owns the day-to-day health of those databases and serves as a hands-on contributor to the organization's migration to Amazon Aurora. This is a build-and-run position. A portion of the work is migration-focused, including assessment, schema and data movement, and cutover rehearsal. The remainder covers the operational fundamentals of backup and recovery, performance, capacity, and security. The role sits within a small group of database specialists working alongside software engineering, site reliability, and data engineering, and carries direct ownership of platform stability with a short path between the work and the outcome.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer production and non-production MySQL and MariaDB environments, including backup and restore, replication, patching, upgrades, capacity planning, and monitoring.
  • Contribute to the Amazon Aurora migration through assessment, schema and data migration, replication and cutover planning, validation, and rollback procedures; help establish operating practices for the target environment.
  • Profile slow queries, analyze execution plans, and design and maintain indexing strategies; partner with application engineers to resolve performance problems at the source rather than masking them.
  • Maintain and regularly test backup and recovery procedures; own recovery point and recovery time objectives and demonstrate that they are met.
  • Manage access controls, credentials, encryption at rest and in transit, and audit requirements for systems handling sensitive government and taxpayer data.
  • Replace manual database operations with scripted, repeatable, version-controlled processes.
  • Review schema changes and migrations prior to release; advise engineering teams on data modeling, query design, and the database implications of new features.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for database-related incidents; lead root cause analysis and drive durable corrective action.
  • Exercise independent judgment in diagnosing and resolving production database issues, determining remediation approach, and escalating based on severity and customer impact.
  • Establish and document operational standards for the database estate and evaluate tooling and process changes that improve reliability or reduce manual effort.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field; equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Three to six years of hands-on database administration experience in production environments.
  • Experience administering managed cloud database services such as AWS RDS, Azure SQL, or an equivalent platform.
  • Demonstrated experience executing backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability procedures in practice, not solely documenting them.
  • Hands‑on experience with Amazon Aurora, either MySQL‑compatible or PostgreSQL‑compatible, including cluster configuration, read replicas, and Aurora‑specific performance characteristics.
  • Participation in a completed database migration, ideally from on‑premises or self‑managed infrastructure to a managed cloud service, including cutover planning and rollback execution.
  • Experience with AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) or comparable replication and migration tooling.
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration experience; our reporting and audit‑compliance systems run on SQL Server and Azure.
  • Experience supporting PHP‑based application stacks, or working closely with engineers on one.
  • Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code tooling such as Terraform or CloudFormation, and with CI/CD practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong working knowledge of MySQL or MariaDB, including configuration, replication, backup and recovery, and version upgrades.
  • Demonstrated query and index tuning ability, including the ability to read execution plans and diagnose performance problems independently.
  • Solid SQL skills and a working understanding of relational data modeling.
  • Scripting proficiency for automation in Python, Bash, or a comparable language.
  • Working knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and high‑availability concepts and architectures.
  • Clear written communication, including the ability to document procedures and incident findings for a technical audience.
  • Sound judgment regarding when and how to elevate during production incidents.
  • Ability to manage competing operational and project priorities independently and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with software engineering, site reliability, and data engineering counterparts in a fully remote environment.
  • Working knowledge of AWS cost and capacity management for database workloads.
  • Familiarity with the security and audit requirements associated with government or otherwise regulated data.
Work Environment
  • Office setting with a moderate noise level.
  • The employee will work at an individual workstation, using a telephone and computer.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain seated for extended periods.
  • Regular use of a computer and other office machinery, such as printers and copy machines.
  • Occasional movement around the office.
  • Frequent communication via telephone.
