Job summary

State of Ohio is seeking a Database Administrator to support the agency's enterprise data environment. The role focuses on designing high-availability database solutions, developing data warehouse and BI structures, and optimizing system performance.

The DBA will collaborate with IT Architecture, CIO leadership, developers, and business partners to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable data systems. Required expertise includes Oracle, PL/SQL, SQL Server, data modeling and enterprise data

Qualifications

  • 60 months combined work experience in database design, implementation, operation and Tier III support.

Responsibilities

  • Design high-availability clustered database solutions and perform hardware planning, node configuration, cluster ware installation and performance tuning.
  • Configure replication, log shipping and standby servers to support business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Collaborate with IT Architecture, CIO leadership, developers and business partners to resolve Tier III database issues.
  • Define BI data needs and design data warehouse and data mart structures for enterprise reporting and analytics.
  • Implement BI tools, dashboards, scorecards and analytic applications.
  • Develop and document standards for installation, configuration, monitoring, security and migrations.
  • Perform performance tuning and optimization across platforms including multidimensional data models.
  • Design secure data exchange standards and align database strategies with business needs.
  • Mentor peers by providing technical guidance, documentation and training.

Position Overview

The Database Administrator (DBA) supports the agency’s enterprise data environment by designing high‑availability database solutions, developing data warehouse and business intelligence structures, optimizing system performance, and guiding database strategy. This role works closely with IT Architecture, CIO leadership, developers, and business partners to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable data systems. The position requires strong technical expertise in Oracle, PL/SQL, SQL Server, data modeling, and enterprise data warehousing concepts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement high‑availability clustered database solutions, including hardware planning, node configuration, cluster ware installation, and performance tuning.
  • Configure replication, log shipping, and standby servers to support business continuity and disaster recovery requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT Architecture, the CIO, and IT Managers to design technical solutions, contribute to business case development, and resolve Tier III database issues.
  • Define business intelligence data needs and design data warehouse and data mart structures to support enterprise reporting and analytics.
  • Implement business intelligence tools, dashboards, scorecards, and analytic applications.
  • Develop and document standards, best practices, and procedures for installation, configuration, monitoring, security, and system migrations.
  • Perform performance tuning and configuration optimization across multiple platforms, including data manipulation models and multidimensional data models.
  • Design standards for secure data exchange between systems and develop database strategies aligned with business needs.
  • Serve as a mentor to peers and junior staff by providing technical guidance, documentation, and training.
Qualifications

60 months combined work experience in any combination of the following: designing and implementing high availability solutions, performing solutions design, providing technical Tier III database support, developing project plans with a project manager or recommending approach through defining tasks and/or leading meetings relating to design, implementation, operation and ongoing maintenance of database systems including 12 months work experience in the primary technology specified by the agency in the position description and job posting; or completion of an associate core program in computer science or information systems; or completion of an undergraduate core program in computer science or information systems. Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above is acceptable if the required, primary technology is possessed.
