Job summary

State Street is seeking a Data Steward to lead governance and data quality oversight across Markets, reporting to the CDO and collaborating with Data Owners and risk stakeholders. You will maintain metadata, oversee data quality, and ensure proper controls across critical data elements and reports.

You will interact with multiple business domains to become a SME in downstream data usage, supporting governance certifications and enterprise standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience in data governance, data stewardship, metadata management, data quality management, and data lineage.
  • Knowledge of enterprise data catalog platforms (e.g., Collibra or similar).
  • Ability to collaborate with business, technology, risk, operations, and governance stakeholders across a matrixed organization.
  • Strong understanding of data models, standards, taxonomy, lineage concepts, and governance controls.
  • Experience supporting data quality investigations, root-cause analysis, and issue escalation.
  • Familiarity with regulatory data governance expectations (e.g., BCBS 239).

Role Summary

The Data Steward serves as the primary execution lead for data governance and data quality oversight activities within across Markets business domains. The role partners with the Chief Data Office (CDO), Business Data Owners (BDOs), Global Critical Report and Key Metric Owners, Data Governance Leads, Technology stakeholders, Business Risk Management, and Data Consumers to support the governance, documentation, traceability, and oversight of data in accordance with the Global Data Governance Policy and related standards.

The role is responsible for maintaining catalog metadata, supporting data quality oversight processes, facilitating error resolution, and ensuring governance requirements are executed. The individual is also expected to interact and understand the multiple businesses across Markets and become a subject matter expert (SME) in the business and downstream use of data to ensure there is clear understanding of the impact on changes to data and the controls needed on data to mitigate data errors.

What You Will Be Responsible For

  • Execute data stewardship responsibilities for assigned business applications, datasets, EUDTs, and associated data assets, with priority focus on data supporting Critical Reports, Key Metrics, material legal entity obligations, and other functions with heightened regulatory oversight.

  • Drive the execution and maintenance of the business data dictionary, ensuring alignment with the enterprise glossary and that business definitions, data context, and usage requirements are clearly documented and understood

  • Coordinate metadata discovery, lineage updates, catalog remediation activities, and implementation of governance requirements resulting from application releases, architecture changes, remediation initiatives, or enterprise guidance updates.

  • Validate that end-to-end lineage for Critical Data Elements is documented, complete, and accurately reflects data capture, transformation, aggregation, consumption, reporting, and distribution processes.

  • Ensure business data definitions are appropriately mapped to technical metadata, physical data assets, and system objects within the Enterprise Data Governance Catalog.

  • Support the development, maintenance, and annual review of Data Provider/Consumer Agreements by coordinating with Data Providers, Data Consumers, Business Data Owners, and Critical Report/Key Metric Owners to document data quality requirements, timeliness expectations, materiality thresholds, and agreed escalation paths.

  • Maintain Data Quality Rules, Data Quality Controls, CDE metadata, report and metric associations, and governance relationships in the Enterprise Data Governance Catalog to ensure traceability and regulatory transparency

  • Maintain associations between Data Quality Rules, Data Quality Controls, CDEs, datasets, processes, reports, lineage assets, and applicable Data Quality Dimensions.

  • Log, track, and facilitate investigation of Data Quality Exceptions; coordinate root-cause analysis and remediation activities across business, operations, and technology stakeholders. Escalate recurring or control-related concerns for Data Quality Issue evaluation when appropriate.

  • Support and facilitate periodic governance reviews and certifications

  • Represent the business area in Data Steward communities, working groups, and governance initiatives, helping drive adoption of enterprise standards and best practices.

  • Experience with data governance, data stewardship, metadata management, data quality management, data lineage, or related data management disciplines.

  • Experience maintaining governance metadata and lineage within enterprise data catalog platforms such as Collibra or similar governance tooling.

  • Ability to influence and collaborate with business, technology, risk, operations, and governance stakeholders across a matrixed organization.

  • Strong understanding of data models, data standards, data taxonomy, authoritative sourcing, lineage concepts, and governance controls.

  • Experience supporting data quality investigations, root-cause analysis, exception management, remediation tracking, and issue escalation.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities while delivering accurate, timely, and sustainable governance outcomes.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, verbal communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Familiarity with regulatory data governance expectations, BCBS 239 principles, critical information governance, and enterprise risk management practices is desirable.

AVP Accountability Statement

Acts as the primary execution lead for data governance and data stewardship activities within the assigned business domain. Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete metadata, Critical Data Element documentation, lineage, Data Quality Rule and Control traceability, data quality error oversight, and governance reporting inputs. Drives adherence to enterprise standards, supports implementation of data quality management requirements, facilitates issue resolution and remediation tracking, and promotes transparency of data assets, lineage, controls, and risks. Escalates material governance, lineage, and data quality concerns through established governance channels while reinforcing Business Data Owner accountability for data quality outcomes, control ownership, and risk management

Salary Range:

$90,000 - $142,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
