Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related role.
• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python.
• Experience developing data pipelines using Spark, Kafka, or similar technologies.
• Experience with cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with Databricks is highly desired.
• Experience with Palantir Ontology is a plus.

Job description

This mid-level Data Scientist role supports USTRANSCOM’s mission for Global Bulk Fuel Management and Delivery by working with JPE data, building predictive machine learning models, and delivering data visualizations that strengthen the Global Common Operating Picture.

Role Overview

As a Data Scientist, you will provide common operating picture support and JPE dataset support through exploratory analysis, model development, and stakeholder-ready reporting. The position also includes collaboration with data engineering teams to access and prepare data from Databricks and Palantir’s Ontology, along with participation in working groups and ad hoc analytics assigned by leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct exploratory data analysis, develop and deploy machine learning models to identify trends, forecast demand, and optimize logistics within the JPE.
• Convert complex results into actionable guidance for stakeholders using reports, dashboards, and presentations.
• Partner with data engineers to obtain and prepare data from Databricks and Palantir’s Ontology for analysis and visualization.
• Analyze JPE data sources to surface opportunities for deeper analysis and additional insight.
• Help define data requirements for ingestion and API development to ensure data is suitable for analytical use.
• Participate in working groups and meetings to contribute to data-driven strategies, tool selection, and analytical requirements.
• Support GBFMD equities presentations for USTRANSCOM, Joint Staff (JS), and Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) governance boards as needed.
• Complete ad hoc analytical projects assigned by leadership.

Clearance and Eligibility

• Active DoD Secret clearance with eligibility for TS/SCI.

Work Location and Travel

Location: On-site at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. (Role listed as St. Louis, MO onsite.)

• Ability to travel within CONUS, approximately 10% of the time.
