Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) seeks a Data Scientist to support data infrastructure and rigorous policy research. You will build data pipelines in Airflow, apply AI-enabled modeling, and ingest data into Google Cloud Platform to produce high-quality resources for decision makers.

Collaborating with software engineers, data analysts, and researchers, you will communicate methods and findings, document data processes, and contribute to open data

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, or a quantitative field.
• Minimum 5 years of professional quantitative or statistical analysis experience.
• Proficiency with SQL and Python.
• Experience with GitHub and code management.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP/AWS/Azure).
• Ability to analyze datasets and support decisions.

Job description

Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) is seeking a Data Scientist to support data infrastructure and rigorous policy research.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain data pipelines and data processing techniques for large datasets using Airflow
• Design, evaluate, and implement solutions, including AI-enabled solutions and advanced modeling, to improve dataset quality and utility
• Ingest structured and unstructured datasets into Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Document and communicate CSET methods and data resources to internal and external audiences
• Collaborate on research designs and identify appropriate data and methods
• Interpret results and draw valid inferences from data to support research and publications
• Communicate substantive findings for policy audiences using accessible visualizations, written outputs, web interfaces, and presentations
• Monitor trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy
• Contribute to organizational development through internal working groups, seminars, and discussions
• Support and mentor colleagues
• Uphold CSET’s mission, values, and culture
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, or a quantitative field (e.g., economics)
• Minimum 5 years of professional quantitative or statistical analysis experience (graduate coursework may be included)
• Proficiency with SQL and Python
• Experience with code management platforms such as GitHub
• Familiarity working in cloud computing environments such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure
• Ability to process and analyze datasets and interpret results to support decisions
• Experience working in a highly collaborative team environment, including with nontechnical stakeholders
• Strong project management skills
• Clear written and verbal communication
• Motivated, enthusiastic, intellectually curious, and self-driven

Job Overview

• Role is part of the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) within the School of Foreign Service
• Works on CSET’s Data Team alongside software engineers, data analysts, and research fellows
• Maintains CSET’s data infrastructure and makes data analytically useful through extraction, classification, clustering, annotation, and entity resolution
• Supports rigorous policy research and high-quality data resources
• Contributes to a project focused on improving bibliometric data, developing methods and metrics for emerging science and technology areas, and providing open data and infrastructure to support research and decision making, including improvements to CSET’s Map of Science and related tools
