Job summary

Steampunk is seeking a seasoned Data Scientist to collaborate with our team of Data Architects and Developers on ML/AI solutions and data-driven strategies. You will craft models, perform feature engineering, and deliver actionable insights to stakeholders.

You will work with data engineers and AI developers to productionize models, build dashboards, and communicate results clearly. A strong mix of technical and customer-facing skills is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical discipline.
• 2-4 years of experience building ML/AI solutions.
• 2-4 years in Data Modeling and Data Solution Development.
• 1+ year in queue modeling and survival analysis.
• Strong programming in SQL, Python, R, Scala or Java.
• Experience manipulating structured and unstructured data.
• Experience with DevSecOps in data science.
• Experience with TensorFlow, Keras, or similar DL tools.
• Experience with Hadoop, Spark, Scala.
• Data visualization skills in Tableau, Power BI, D3, ArcGIS.
• Git, Bash, Unix commands experience.
• Cloud analytics (AWS/Azure/GCP) with SageMaker or similar.
• Familiarity with Flask, DBOps or MLOps is a plus.
• Experience with Solr, Elasticsearch or similar tools.

Responsibilities

• Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover trends and data quality issues.
• Develop ML models using scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, TensorFlow or similar.
• Perform feature engineering and model optimization for accuracy.
• Evaluate models with appropriate metrics and document findings.
• Collaborate with Data Engineers to ensure production-ready datasets.
• Work with AI Developers to integrate models into production systems.
• Build dashboards and executive summaries to communicate insights.
• Translate user needs into modeling requirements and iterate outputs.
• Maintain reproducible code, notebooks, and experiment history.
• Stay current with data science methodologies and cloud analytics workflows.
• Contribute to Steampunk’s AI & Data Exploitation Practice.

Overview

We are looking for seasoned Data Scientist to work with our existing team of Data Architects and Developers to develop strategies, create ML/AI solutions, and deliver results. We are looking for a more than just a "Data Scientist", but a technologist with excellent communication and customer service skills and a passion for data and problem solving.

Contributions

• Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover trends,identifydata quality issues, anddeterminemodeling opportunities.
• Develop machine learning models using frameworks such as scikit-learn,XGBoost,PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar libraries.
• Perform feature engineering, dataset preparation, and model optimization to improve predictive accuracy and operational performance.
• Evaluate models usingappropriate statisticalmethods and performance metrics, documentingfindingsand informing iterative improvements.
• Work with Data Engineers to understand and enhance data pipelines, ensuring model-ready datasets areaccurate, complete, and consistent.
• Collaborate with AI Developers andLLMOps/MLOpsEngineers to integrate ML models into production environments or decision-support applications.
• Build visualizations, dashboards, data stories, and executive-friendly summaries to communicate insights clearly to stakeholders.
• Support human-centered design processes by translating user needs into modeling requirements and refining model outputs based on feedback.
• Contribute to reproducibility and auditability bymaintainingwell-organized code, notebooks, documentation, and experimenthistories.
• Stay current with modern data science methodologies, ML techniques, data processing tools, and cloud-enabled analytics workflows.

Qualifications

• Ability to hold a position of public trust with the US government.
• 2-4 years industry experience developing ML/AI solutions and a passion for solving complex problems.
• 2-4 years direct experience in Data Modeling and Data Solution Development
• 1+ year performing queue modeling and survival analysis
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, business, or a scientific or technical discipline
• Demonstrated experience manipulating structured and unstructured data for analysis
• Strong programming skills in SQL, Python, R, Scala, Java, or similar language
• Experience using Python to manipulate large data sets
• Experience with DevSecOps, as it applies to data science
• Demonstrated experience with TensorFlow, Keras, or other Deep Learning tools and frameworks
• Demonstrated experience in big data systems including Hadoop, Spark, Scala
• Data visualization skills in Tableau, Power BI, D3, ArcGIS, or similar
• Experience with Git, Bash, Unix commands
• Experience in Cloud analytics (AWS, Azure, or GCP) with tools such as AWS SageMaker, Azure HDInsight, etc.
• Familiarity with Flask is a plus
• Knowledge of DBOps and MLOps framework is a plus
• Experience with Solr, Elasticsearch, or similar tool is a plus

Steampunk relies on several factors to determine salary, including but not limited to geographic location, contractual requirements, education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. The projected compensation range for this position is $125,000 to $160,000. The estimate displayed represents a typical annual salary range for this position.
