Position Purpose
The Data Science Manager is responsible for leading a team of data scientists (individual contributors), ensuring that their efforts drive business profitability, increased efficiencies and improved customer experience. This role leads overall programs, maximizes resources, partners with project teams and business partners, and supports problem‑solving efforts. Data Science Managers provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to team members, supporting their development of business and technical skills. A strong proficiency in one or more data science specializations such as optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search or NLP is required.
Key Responsibilities
- People Management & Team Leadership (40%): Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching; evaluate performance; attract and retain top talent; support development of business knowledge and technical skills; document processes and requirements; develop onboarding and training plans; manage resources; foster collaboration; support algorithm and model development; drive results and celebrate accomplishments.
- Project Management (25%): Prioritize and assign projects; manage programs for consistent execution; align objectives with business partners; serve as escalation point; provide executive updates to leaders on program effectiveness and recommendations.
- Strategy & Business Development (15%): Leverage business knowledge and relationships to seek new opportunities; develop trust and collaboration with internal customers; align with IT support model, tools, and governance; collaborate across organization to establish strategy and optimize talent management.
- Technical Exploration & Development (20%): Seek knowledge on key developments; participate in continuous improvement by developing replicable solutions; ensure best practices and vision for data analysis and model production.
Direct Manager / Direct Reports
- Reports to Senior Manager or above.
- Manages programs and has direct reports.
Travel Requirements
- Typically requires overnight travel 5–20% of the time.
Physical Requirements
- Mostly seated; occasional light lifting.
Working Conditions
- Located in a comfortable indoor area; conditions infrequent and not objectionable.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be eighteen years of age or older.
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- 9+ years of experience in business intelligence and analytics.
- Previous people or project team management experience.
- Expertise in predictive modeling, data mining and data analysis.
- Mastery of running queries against data (preferably Google BigQuery or SQL).
- Proficiency with data visualization software (preferably Tableau).
- Mastery of statistical techniques to identify key insights.
- Proficiency in prescriptive modeling like optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search or NLP.
- Demonstrated proficiency in predictive modeling, data mining and data analysis.
- Experience managing and growing team members in a professional setting.
Minimum Education
- Knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree program or equivalent in a field related to the job.
