Job Title: Data Management Specialist - Center for Tobacco Research

Department: CCC | Medical Oncology

Position Summary

The Center for Tobacco Research (CTR) at The Ohio State University is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Data Management Analyst to support the management, quality control, analysis, and reporting of data generated through the Center's clinical research studies. Working under the direction of the Senior Biostatistician, the Data Management Analyst will support the ongoing monitoring and management of study data, including participant recruitment and retention metrics, data quality monitoring, database management, data integration, statistical analyses, and preparation of reports, tables, figures, and scientific manuscripts. The position will work across multiple clinical research studies and collaborate closely with biostatisticians, clinical research staff, investigators, and other members of the research team. An important component of this position will be gaining hands‑on experience with clinical research operations. The Data Management Analyst will periodically support clinical study coordination activities, including participant visits, data collection, and other study procedures. This experience is intended to provide a practical understanding of how clinical research data are generated and collected and will strengthen the individual's ability to identify data‑quality issues, understand study databases, and effectively support downstream data analysis. As the Center's research portfolio and volume of available data continue to expand, the position will progressively assume greater responsibility for data management, statistical analysis, and reporting activities.

Responsibilities

Data Management and Quality Control

Assist with the management and maintenance of clinical research databases within the REDCap platform.

Monitor study data as it are collected for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and adherence to study protocols.

Develop and perform routine data quality‑control checks and identify discrepancies or missing information.

Work with clinical research staff to investigate and resolve data discrepancies and improve data quality.

Clean, organize, and prepare datasets for statistical analysis and reporting.

Assist with database closeout activities and preparation of final analysis datasets at study completion.

Integrate data from multiple sources with primary REDCap databases, including screening data, product‑use topography, pharmacokinetic measures, and other study‑specific data sources.

Maintain organized documentation of data‑management procedures, quality‑control processes, and dataset modifications.

Reporting and Data Monitoring

Coordinate the compilation and dissemination of regular weekly and monthly reports for studies conducted within the Center for Tobacco Research.

Prepare reports monitoring participant recruitment, enrollment, retention, study progress, and other key study‑performance metrics.

Summarize and communicate study data to investigators, research staff, and Center leadership.

Identify trends, inconsistencies, or potential data‑quality issues through routine monitoring and reporting.

Assist with developing and maintaining standardized reporting processes across Center studies.

Statistical Analysis and Scientific Support

Conduct routine statistical analyses under the supervision of the Senior Biostatistician.

Prepare statistical tables, figures, summaries, and other data visualizations for research studies.

Assist with data preparation and analysis for study reports, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts.

Support the Senior Biostatistician and study investigators with statistical analyses and interpretation of study data.

Assist with the preparation of statistical methods, results, tables, and figures for scientific manuscripts and other research publications.

Develop proficiency in statistical programming and data‑management tools used by the Center.

Clinical Research Support

Provide supplementary support for clinical research studies conducted within the Center.

Assist with participant recruitment, screening, scheduling, and study visits as needed.

Collect and document study data and biological specimens according to study protocols and standard operating procedures.

Perform study procedures within the scope of training and assigned responsibilities.

Enter and verify participant data in REDCap and other study systems.

Develop a practical understanding of clinical research workflows, study protocols, and the processes through which research data are generated.

Maintain compliance with applicable institutional policies, study protocols, and human‑subject research requirements.

Team Collaboration and Professional Development

Collaborate with biostatisticians, research coordinators, research nurses, investigators, and other Center personnel to support successful study execution.

Participate in study meetings and contribute to discussions regarding data quality, study progress, and analytical needs.

Develop increasing independence in data management, statistical programming, and research reporting under the mentorship of the Senior Biostatistician.

Maintain current knowledge of applicable data‑management, statistical, and clinical research practices.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Management Information Systems, Health Sciences, Computer Science or relevant field.

Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental statistical concepts and methods.

Experience working with statistical or data‑management software.

Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to identify errors, inconsistencies, and data‑quality issues.

Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and priorities in a clinical research environment.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, data science, or a closely related field.

Experience with SAS and/or R.

Experience with REDCap or other clinical research database systems.

Experience managing, cleaning, or integrating research datasets from multiple sources.

Experience preparing statistical tables, figures, or research reports.

Familiarity with clinical research methodology and human‑subject‑s research.

Experience working with longitudinal, clinical, behavioral, or pharmacokinetic data.

Experience supporting scientific manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, or publications.

Experience with data visualization and presentation of research findings.

Previous experience working in a clinical research or academic research environment.
