Citizens invites applications for the Data Engineer Intern: 2027 Enterprise Technology & Security Summer Internship Program. The 10-week internship provides hands-on experience in data engineering, modern cloud platforms (AWS), and real-time/batch pipelines, with Java, Python, and SQL development.

Mentorship, leadership exposure, and professional workshops accompany project work and networking opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field.
  • Expected graduation date of May 2028.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Experience working with raw as well as prepared datasets.
  • Understanding of master data management principles and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a team environment, strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Gain exposure to AWS-based data platforms and develop high-scale batch and real-time data pipelines.
  • Strengthen programming in Java, Python, and SQL while learning Spark and distributed systems.
  • Build knowledge of data modeling and ETL/ELT pipelines (Snowflake, Kafka, etc.).
  • Explore enterprise AI platforms that support ML, analytics, and generative AI workloads.
  • Learn about LLM-based architectures, embeddings, vector stores, and multi-agent patterns.
  • Contribute to AI solutions via APIs, microservices, observability, and secure integrations.

Data Engineer Intern: 2027 Enterprise Technology & Security Summer Internship Program

Calling all emerging technologists! Looking to gain practical, hands‑on experience in the field of data engineering? The Enterprise Technology & Security Summer Internship Program is a critical program within Enterprise Technology & Security Services that helps passionate early career professionals gain real‑world exposure to groundbreaking technology.

This Internship program begins in late May 2027, and will be based out of one of our headquarters in Johnston, RI, Phoenix, AZ, or Plano, TX
Data Engineer Track

Data Engineer Interns work collaboratively with Data Engineers to pursue a broad range of initiatives. By using technical skills and a thirst for innovation, interns will leverage advanced analytics and big data techniques to derive valuable insights from enterprise data and deliver those insights back to stakeholders.

Through hands‑on experience in this role, the Data Engineer Intern will:
  • Gain exposure to modern cloud‑native data platforms (AWS) and the development of high‑scale batch and real‑time data pipelines.
  • Develop an understanding of distributed data systems (Spark) and strengthen programming skills in Java, Python, and SQL.
  • Build foundational knowledge of data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines (Snowflake Pipe, Kafka streaming, etc.), and data product engineering for structured and unstructured data.
  • Develop an understanding of enterprise AI platforms that support machine learning, predictive analytics, and generative/agentic AI workloads.
  • Gain exposure to LLM‑based architectures, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, and agentic AI systems, including autonomous workflows, orchestration, and multi‑agent patterns.
  • Build experience contributing to AI solutions through APIs, microservices (FastAPI/Django), observability, and secure platform integration.
Experience during the program

In this 10‑week program, interns will gain a strong understanding of Data Engineering at Citizens. This program also provides mentorship, exposure to senior leadership, and participation in a variety of activities to further develop professional skills, including:

  • Orientation and networking with all ETS interns
  • Professional development workshops (such as Personal Branding and Communicating with Impact)
  • Social activities (such as sporting events and a bank‑wide intern BBQ)
  • Dedicated community service activities
Life after the program

High‑performing interns interested in pursuing a career within Enterprise Technology & Security may be extended an offer to return as a Full‑time colleague in our Enterprise Technology & Security Development Program (ETSDP) upon graduation. The ETSDP is a full‑time program that helps rising professionals build a meaningful career within software, network/systems, data or cloud engineering, technology risk and security.

What you’ll need to apply
Basic qualifications:
  • Successfully complete a video interview assessment within 4 days of receiving the link. If not completed within the timeframe, your application will be automatically withdrawn from consideration.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or other technology‑related degree
  • Expected graduation date of May 2028
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Experience working with raw as well as prepared datasets
  • Understanding of master data management principles and processes
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a team environment, strong interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
  • Practical experience/exposure to data engineering solutions gained through coursework, internships, or personal projects
  • Familiarity with ETL, ELT, Star Schema, Hadoop, Apache Spark, Beam, Flink, and/or message brokers/messaging platforms such as Apache Kafka
  • Understanding of the banking industry, specifically the functions of custodial and consumer banking

Hours per Week: 40
Work Schedule: M-F 8:30am - 5pm
