Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to help build and modernize a centralized enterprise data environment supporting analytics, reporting, and business decision-making. This is a highly hands-on opportunity for a data engineering professional with 5+ years of experience who has previously helped build or rebuild a production data environment rather than simply maintain an established platform.

The Data Engineer will play a key role in establishing scalable data architecture, governance, modeling, and ETL/ELT practices using Microsoft Fabric, SQL, lakehouse and warehouse technologies, and modern data engineering principles. This role offers the opportunity to help shape the foundation of a growing data function while partnering closely with business and technology stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows that integrate data from databases, APIs, files, enterprise applications, and third-party platforms.
  • Develop and support Microsoft Fabric solutions, including Data Factory pipelines, Lakehouse, Warehouse, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks, and related data services.
  • Establish data architecture, modeling, mapping, and governance practices that improve data quality, lineage, security, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Design and optimize relational, dimensional, lakehouse, and warehouse data structures to support reporting, analytics, and operational requirements.
  • Implement monitoring, performance optimization, data quality controls, and operational support for business-critical data pipelines and platforms.
  • Partner with technical and business stakeholders to understand existing data sources, workflows, dependencies, and requirements while helping define the organization's future-state data architecture.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in data engineering, ETL/ELT development, data integration, database development, or a related enterprise data role, including hands-on experience building production-grade data pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, along with strong SQL, data modeling, ETL/ELT, data architecture, and data governance skills.
  • Experience helping build, rebuild, or modernize an enterprise data environment, including establishing architecture, standards, governance, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience with relational databases, lakehouse and warehouse platforms, API integrations, file-based ingestion, orchestration, monitoring, and data quality practices; Python or similar scripting experience is valued.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-facing skills, with the ability to work independently, translate business requirements into technical solutions, and serve as a trusted technical partner. Relevant Microsoft, Azure, Fabric, data, or cloud certifications are preferred.

What Success Looks Like

This position requires more than technical expertise. Our client is looking for someone who is proactive, curious, professional, collaborative, and customer-focused. The successful Data Engineer will communicate clearly with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders, operate effectively without constant oversight, take ownership of problems, and be willing to step in wherever needed to support the broader team.

The IT organization is undergoing change and restructuring with an emphasis on stronger collaboration and breaking down silos. This creates an opportunity for someone who wants to help improve an existing environment, contribute ideas, support teammates, and grow alongside the organization.
