The Data Engineer role supports Pharmacy Benefit Management clients by maintaining and improving complex data systems. The position focuses on building scalable data solutions for analytics and business intelligence while adhering to healthcare data compliance requirements.
Role Overview
In an Agile environment, this role partners with cross-functional stakeholders to design, develop, test, and optimize data solutions. Responsibilities include enhancing existing ETL and reporting processes, supporting database performance, and contributing technical expertise across new development and complex enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in Agile development activities, including contributing to all Scrum ceremonies.
- Design, develop, and deliver solutions aligned to requirements and committed schedules.
- Collaborate with the Product Owner to evaluate current systems and inform future development decisions.
- Test, debug, and implement enhancements to existing code, processes, and reports.
- Maintain existing processes, including VisualCron schedules, SQL/ETL procedures, and reporting.
- Assist in troubleshooting pharmacy claim related issues, reports, and processes.
- Support existing .NET applications and related SQL code connected to NCPDP Pharmacy Encounter data submissions.
- Create detailed technical specifications based on requirements and design.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, including query tuning and indexing strategies.
- Review existing and new processes and provide recommendations for reliable and maintainable code.
- Analyze and research software requirements to determine feasibility within time and cost constraints.
- Act as a technical expert for the design, development, coding, testing, and debugging of new software and complex enhancements.
- Learn and integrate new technologies with cloud and product infrastructure.
- Escalate problems and proposed solutions to staff engineers and management.
- Communicate updates, changes, and risks to stakeholders and propose solutions.
- Share knowledge through mentorship to help advance the team.
- Stay current with emerging trends and best practices in database development and related technologies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field, or 4+ years of related experience (or equivalent education and experience combination) required.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field preferred.
- Proficient in database design, normalization, and data modeling.
- Strong capability in dimensional data modeling and OLAP principles.
- 10+ years of SQL database development using the Microsoft SQL Server toolset (SSIS, SSRS, SSMS, SSAS, RDBMS).
- 5+ years of experience with Data Warehouse methodologies.
- Expertise in query tuning, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with cloud-based database solutions (e.g., Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS).
- Advanced SQL skills including data modeling, DBO creation, management, and indexing.
- Experience implementing high availability, high throughput, and scalable systems.
- Expertise in identifying and diagnosing application and database issues, performing root cause analysis, and recommending corrective actions.
- Experience with PowerShell and Python.
- Experience using provided tools (AWS, GitLab, Visual Studio).
- Agile methodology experience (Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc.) preferred.
- Familiarity with .NET, C#, JSON, XML, VisualCron, PowerBI.
- Familiarity with reporting and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Knowledge of non-relational databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) and big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
- Healthcare technology and online pharmacy claims adjudication preferred.
- Knowledge of pharmacy industry standards such as NCPDP, HL7, ANSI X12, and/or related drug database terminologies and classifications.
- Knowledge of Medicare Part D, PDE submissions & returns, pharmacy claims, and benefit management.
- Demonstrated ability to be creative, flexible, and passionate about building quality solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to architect, design, develop, and implement solutions for micro-service and monolithic architectures.
- Skilled in written and verbal communication, with ability to collaborate and work independently as needed.
- Initiative and follow-through on projects with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated expertise across multiple technical areas or disciplines.
- Interest and ability to learn additional coding languages and technologies as needed.
