Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation seeks a Data Collection Field Technician to support traffic data collection across Washington State. This journey-level role involves extensive travel to install and maintain temporary counting equipment, perform manual counts, and collect transportation data for engineering and policy decisions.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to travel extensively and be away from home for extended periods.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate state-owned vehicles for long-distance travel.
  • Physical stamina to perform fieldwork and move materials up to 100 pounds; work outdoors in varying weather.
  • Proficiency with personal computers, Microsoft Suite, File Maker Pro, and traffic counting software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with ability to document data collection concisely.
  • Experience safely performing fieldwork near roadways and conducting traffic studies (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Travel across Washington State to install and maintain temporary traffic counting equipment.

The role requires fieldwork in varying weather conditions and repetitive physical tasks including bending, squatting, kneeling, and equipment handling.

Key qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to travel extensively and be away from home for entire workweeks during large portions of the year
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate state-owned vehicles for extended periods and long-distance travel
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform fieldwork including maneuvering materials up to 100 pounds, traversing uneven terrain, and repetitive physical movements
  • Proficiency with personal computers, Microsoft Suite, File Maker Pro, and traffic counting software
  • Strong communication and documentation skills with ability to compose concise records of data collection efforts
  • Experience safely performing work on or near traveled ways and conducting traffic studies (preferred)
