Job summary

NTTDATA is seeking a Data Center Technician to support critical facilities with expertise in electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. The role ensures regulatory compliance, monitors operations, and drives efficiency.

Responsibilities include managing chillers, HVAC, electrical gear, and life safety devices; coordinating with contractors; and maintaining a strong safety and incident-free environment.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent with hands-on facility experience.
  • 3+ years in mechanical/electrical roles in critical facilities.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA 70E certification required.
  • OSHA forklift certification or ability to obtain after hire.
  • High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement cost-reduction and efficiency strategies.
  • Manage mechanical systems: chillers, HVAC, humidification.
  • Oversee electrical systems: switchgear, UPS, PDU, load distribution.
  • Maintain fire life safety systems and detectors.
  • Operate and monitor facilities systems and respond to issues.
  • Analyze systems for best practices for customers.
  • Provide feedback to engineering on standards and processes.
  • Coordinate with contractors for QA on expansions.
  • Track preventive and predictive maintenance with the team.
  • Ensure no unplanned customer-impacting events, other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Data Center Technician

Provides working-level expertise in data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems, maintains operational integrity and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies to minimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and implement new technologies.
  • Manage mechanical systems such as chilled water, HVAC (roof‑top units, CRAC/CRAH, humidification).
  • Oversee electrical systems including utility/generator switchgear, UPS, PDU, and load distribution.
  • Maintain fire life safety systems: wet sprinklers, pre‑action sprinklers, detection devices.
  • Operate, monitor, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems.
  • Analyze systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers.
  • Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on effectiveness of standards and processes.
  • Coordinate with contractors and consultants for quality assurance on expansions/upsides.
  • Work with CF Ops Lead Technician to track preventive and predictive maintenance program.
  • Ensure maximum operational efficiency, cost reduction, and avoid unplanned customer‑impacting events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • In‑depth knowledge of data center mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems.
  • Proficiency with NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and related building codes.
  • Understanding of industrial safety best practices (lockout/tagout, arc‑flash protection, OSHA, state regulations).
  • Experience in data trending, tracking, and analysis using integrated critical monitoring systems.
  • Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial/industrial systems (e.g., chillers, cooling towers, pumps, HVAC, fire suppression, BMS, generators, UPS).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Ability to coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and multi‑tasking abilities.
  • Operational competency with hand and machine tools, electrical tools, and forklift.
  • Comfortable working in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities, including nights, holidays, and some weekends.
Education & Experience
  • Associate of Science in Technology degree or equivalent education and work experience.
  • Minimum 3 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (preferably data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant).
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA 70E certification during employment.
  • OSHA‑approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
  • Capability to communicate verbally, visually, and by listening.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers for equipment and computer use.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on raised platforms.
Work Conditions

Data center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises. Extensive daily usage of workstation or computer. Must work on‑site; telecommuting is not permitted.

Special Requirements
  • Willingness to participate in after‑hours notification and escalation protocol.
  • Must wear leather close‑toed shoes with a solid rubber sole.
  • Must possess a current valid state‑issued driver’s license.
  • May be required to use a personal mobile device; a monthly stipend will be provided for related expenses.
Compensation & Benefits

Hourly base salary $33.90 – $50.90 (eligible for overtime). Eligible for an annual bonus. Full‑time employees receive paid time‑off, medical, dental, vision, life and supplemental insurance, short‑term and long‑term disability, flexible spending account, and 401(k) retirement plan.
