Data Center Regional Water Systems Engineer

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Regional Water Systems Engineer

As a Regional Water Systems Engineer at Switch, you will serve as the regional technical authority for water quality and water system availability. You will execute Switch’s water management strategy across data centers from construction and commissioning through live operations. You will identify system risks, guide corrective actions, and improve water quality, efficiency, and equipment reliability. You will also turn lessons learned in the field into practical improvements for standards, projects, and operating practices.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide technical guidance for new data center construction, start-up, commissioning, submittal and RFI reviews, and QA/QC activities.
  • Guide site teams on water system design intent, water quality KPIs, operating risks, and corrective actions.
  • Oversee third-party water treatment vendors and hold them accountable for performance, testing, reporting, and service quality.
  • Monitor water chemistry performance across regional sites and elevate significant deviations when needed.
  • Analyze water quality data and system trends to identify risks to reliability, efficiency, and equipment life.
  • Diagnose and help resolve corrosion, scaling, biological growth, contamination, air entrainment, leaks, and other water system issues.
  • Support incident investigations and root cause analysis involving water chemistry or system degradation.
  • Interpret vendor reports and help site teams identify and complete appropriate corrective actions.
  • Apply Switch water chemistry standards and reporting requirements consistently across regional sites.
  • Improve water use efficiency, chemical treatment, and overall system reliability.
  • Provide technical guidance and education that strengthens water system knowledge across site teams.
  • Share lessons learned with engineering teams to support specification, design, and operating improvements.
What We’re Looking For
  • You make sound technical decisions using system data, field conditions, and established standards.
  • You communicate technical risks and recommendations clearly, including the details others need to make decisions.
  • You follow through on issues and corrective actions, especially when reliability or client operations could be affected.
  • You work effectively with operations, engineering, construction, commissioning, and external service providers.
  • You identify problems early and bring practical solutions, not just observations.
  • You work carefully in mission-critical environments where reliability, safety, and following established procedures matter.
What You’ll Bring
  • Relevant experience with cooling water, hydronic systems, and water treatment in mission-critical or similarly complex environments.
  • Experience interpreting water analysis reports, system trends, and performance data.
  • Experience diagnosing and mitigating corrosion, scaling, biological growth, or related cooling water issues.
  • Experience managing or providing technical oversight of third-party vendors and service providers.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, sequences of operations, submittals, and MEP drawing packages.
  • Ability to analyze technical problems, prioritize risks, and implement practical solutions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical and operational audiences.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent directly related industry experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of field-based data center work, with reasonable accommodations as applicable.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment when working in applicable field or operational environments.
  • This position may require additional background checks and drug screenings before and during employment to support customer‑specific deployments.
