Job summary

JLL is seeking a Data Center Operating Engineer for the Union Local 30 in the New York area. The role covers hands-on maintenance of critical building systems, with a shift of 11 PM–7 AM and a requirement to be a Union member or willing to join upon acceptance by the Union.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, at least four years in building maintenance, a trade school degree in HVAC or electronics, and Universal CFC certification (or obtain within 90 days).

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical, electrical and power generation equipment to support the critical environment.
  • Operate systems safely and in accordance with regulations and SOPs.
  • Learn building control, electrical and UPS systems via on‑the‑job training and manuals.
  • Perform preventive and routine maintenance and equipment rounds as directed.
  • Inspect and repair pumps, fans, valves and motors to ensure proper operation.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints and job standards.
  • Maintain time and production records and customer service requests.
  • Adapt to a wide range of responsibilities while minimizing errors.
  • Work as part of a team and foster a positive environment.
  • Maintain multiple building systems to applicable standards.

DATA CENTER OPERATING ENGINEER (Union) Local 30

Shift: 11‑7 Sunday‑Monday‑Tuesday / Wednesday‑Thursday‑off / Friday Saturday

JOB SUMMARY

A Data Center Operating Engineer will assist in the hands‑on maintenance of building systems for the safe, efficient, and proper operations of all assigned properties. The Engineer will perform minor repairs, help in the operation, monitoring, and performance of preventive maintenance on the building systems as necessary. The Operating Engineer must be a Member in Good Standing with the Local Union holding the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the site, or be willing to become a member upon acceptance by the Union.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in the building maintenance industry and an accredited trade school degree in HVAC, electronics, or another related trade is required. Union training and certification are acceptable. Must have Universal CFC certification (or obtain within 90 days of employment).

COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and follow detailed procedures and associated forms and data logging. Ability to use common technology such as a desktop PC, cellular phone, tablet/iPad, copier/scanner, and other electronic tools or devices. Ability to use common software and applications such as Microsoft Office products (especially Word, Outlook, and Excel) and CMMS systems.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as load balancing, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regular exposure to risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, and heights up to 30 ft. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions as well as very cold and uncomfortable heat while inside and outside the facility. Noise level is sometimes moderately loud.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical, electrical and power generation equipment and systems to support the critical environment.
  • Operate systems safely and efficiently in accordance with government regulations, company policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Quickly learn building control, electrical and UPS systems using on‑the‑job training, operations manuals and documentation.
  • Perform predictive, planned, preventative and routine maintenance as well as equipment rounds and service requests as directed. Follow the JLL Preventative Maintenance Program and assist with its improvement.
  • Inspect and repair pumps, fans, valves and motors ensuring proper operation of the equipment and systems.
  • Perform visual and operational inspection of associated equipment and interpret specifications, blueprints and job standards.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems and achieve work goals.
  • Maintain time and production records and customer service requests.
  • Adapt to a wide‑range of responsibilities while adhering to procedures that minimize human error.
  • Act as a team player, fostering teamwork to create a positive working environment.
  • Maintain mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire, life safety and control systems to keep them up to applicable standards.
  • Monitor operation and maintain refrigeration, water cooling, air conditioning equipment, boilers, heating, ventilation and hot‑water equipment, pumps, valves, piping and filters, and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Complete all tenant service requests accurately and expediently.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures for safe storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials while maintaining a clean and safe workplace.
  • Act as the on‑call engineer as requested by the supervisor.
  • Participate actively in emergency response procedures, technical and safety training programs.
  • Use proper safety equipment and perform all work safely.
Evening 3rd Shift (11PM-7AM)

This position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Estimated compensation for this position

106,000.00 – 106,000.00 USD per year.
