Job summary

National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) in Golden, CO, invites applications for a Graduate (6-12 month) Intern - Data Center Load Modeling for Transmission Planning Studies. The role focuses on developing composite data center load models, including detailed EMT models and RMS-based phasor models, to improve grid reliability and planning studies.

The internship will utilize PSCAD/RTDS and other tools to build and validate models, analyze data center architectures, and collaborate with engineers

Qualifications

  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Undergraduate full-time student or recent graduate within 12 months
  • Graduate student or recent graduate within 12 months pursuing master/PhD in power systems or related field
  • Completed degree in power systems, electrical engineering, or related field and pursuing/graduated from master/PhD

Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze data center electrical architecture (UPS, PDUs, cooling, backup generation)
  • Develop and validate component-level models (UPS with PFC, PDU, VFD)
  • Build composite data center load model integrating IT load and motor-driven auxiliaries
  • Implement EMT models in PSCAD/RTDS to capture fast transients and fault behavior
  • Validate EMT models with real-world data
  • Create RMS phasor models for transmission planning tools (PSS/E, PSLF)
  • Compare EMT and RMS models for accuracy across scenarios
  • Document modeling methods, assumptions, and validation results
  • Collaborate with planning and protection engineers to meet study requirements
  • Contribute to technical reports and publications
