Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. is seeking a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician to maintain and operate critical data center infrastructure, including stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS, chillers, and cooling towers.

You will perform preventative maintenance and respond to facility events. This hands-on role requires travel to active sites, ability to work shifts up to 12 hours, and compliance with security clearances (TS/SCI with polygraph).

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1+ year electrical or mechanical experience, or data center/mission critical facilities experience.
  • Current, active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility or above.

Responsibilities

  • Daily building rounds monitoring electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment to ensure 24/7 reliability.
  • Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and EPMS.
  • Troubleshoot facility and rack‑level events within internal SLA.
  • Perform rack installs and decommissioning within SLA.
  • PM, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repairs of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Technical writing to support change management.
  • Monitor daily work requests and manage to resolution, and execute projects from conception to completion.
  • On-site support of contractors, sub-contractors and vendors, ensuring that all work performed complies with practices and local legislation.
  • Shift changes up to 12 hours and possible on-call rotations.
  • Role may support more than one location/site.

Description

As a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician (EOT), you will maintain and operate the critical infrastructure systems that keep AWS's cloud running. Working in some of the most sophisticated and secure data centers in the world, you will be hands‑on with electrical, mechanical, and life safety equipment—ensuring the 99.999% uptime that millions of customers rely on. In this role, you will troubleshoot mission‑critical systems including diesel generators, 3-phase electrical systems, UPS units, chillers, and cooling towers. You will perform preventative maintenance, respond to facility events, and collaborate with engineers from around the globe to test and implement emerging technologies that meet the demands of a rapidly evolving cloud computing landscape. This is a technical, hands‑on role where your work directly impacts the reliability of AWS services—from startups to Global 500 companies. We have a passion for learning and evolving, and we’re looking for people who want to help us continue setting the industry standard. This role supports data centers in various operational stages. The position may be assigned to a facility still under development, which could require travel to established locations for training until your designated site becomes fully operational. Candidates must be able to travel (over 50 miles) or commute (less than 50 miles) to active data center sites as required by business needs. This position requires that the candidate selected be a US citizen and currently possess and maintain an active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility. The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph and satisfy other security related requirements. This position requires the candidate to opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

Key job responsibilities
  • Daily building rounds to monitor and record information from electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment to ensure 24/7 reliability and availability
  • Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS)
  • Assist in troubleshooting of facility and rack-level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA)
  • Perform rack installs and rack decommissioning within internal SLA
  • Perform PM, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Technical writing to support change management program
  • Monitor daily work requests and manage to resolution, and execute projects from conception to completion
  • On-site support of contractors, sub-contractors and vendors, ensuring that all work performed is in accordance with established practices, procedures & local legislation
  • Work schedule changes depending on specific site needs. Shifts can be up to 12-hours and may rotate on a predefined schedule. Some locations have on‑call rotations.
  • Role may support more than one location/site.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently
  • Participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds
  • Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder
  • Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, work above shoulders, grasp, carry, push and pull objects into position
  • Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection
A day in the life

This role acts as Amazon’s front line when it comes to hands‑on electrical and mechanical equipment preventative maintenance (PM) and troubleshooting, reporting to a site’s Data Center Facility Manager (FM). They will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission‑critical data center facility equipment including stand‑by diesel generators and related fuel systems, 3 phase electrical systems such as switchgear, UPS units, PDUs, and wet cell batteries and associated systems. Mechanical equipment includes CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers and associated systems, pumps, and motors. Additional support equipment is included in the scope of the role which includes fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment.

As part of AWS Infrastructure Services, you will work at the intersection of traditional facilities engineering and cloud-scale innovation. Our focus for the coming years is scaling operations to support new AWS regions while improving energy efficiency and system reliability. You will be part of implementing next‑generation power and cooling solutions, developing maintenance strategies, and solving complex technical challenges with thousands of variables.

Basic Qualifications
  • High school or equivalent diploma
  • 1+ years of electrical or mechanical, or 1+ years of data center or mission critical facilities (example: hospital, military facility, public safety facility, etc.) experience
  • Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Top Secret with SCI eligibility or above
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of data center engineering experience
