Job summary

Texas 2036 is seeking a Data and Systems Analyst to design reproducible data workflows, maintain datasets, and support policy teams with data-driven insights. You will develop data pipelines, automate cleaning and transformation, and collaborate with multiple teams to ensure accurate, accessible data outputs across Texas 2036 publications.

The role requires strong skills in data analysis and statistical programming (Stata/Python/R), plus experience with SQL, APIs, and Git.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in data science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with large statewide or archival datasets in applied research or analytics.
  • Experience with managing and harmonizing large datasets and building data workflows.
  • Proficiency with Stata, Python, or R for data analysis.
  • Experience automating data cleaning, transformation, reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to create clear data visualizations for non-technical audiences.
  • Strong documentation and data governance practices.

  • Identify opportunities to better leverage existing datasets and integrate new data sources that strengthen Texas 2036’s analytical capacity.
  • Improve documentation, version control, and data governance practices to support transparency, reproducibility and institutional knowledge.
  • Collaborate with research, policy, and communications teams to ensure data outputs are accurate, consistent and maintainable.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and technical partners supporting data tools, visualizations, and analytical infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging data and analytical tools — including AI-assisted workflows — that improve data processing, documentation and analytical efficiency.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support the overall mission and goals of Texas 2036.

About The Role

The Texas 2036 Data and Research Department ensures that the organization’s work is grounded in credible, disciplined evidence that informs policy development, legislative decision-making, and public understanding of the future of Texas. The team conducts applied research, analyzes complex datasets and translates findings into clear insights for policymakers, stakeholders and the public.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in data science, statistics, economics, public policy or administration, quantitative social science, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working with large, statewide or archival datasets in applied research, informatics, business intelligence or analytics or data infrastructure roles.
  • Experience with managing, harmonizing, and fuzzy or probabilistic matching for large or complex datasets and building analysis ready data workflows or pipelines.
  • Demonstrable proficiency with data analysis and statistical programming using tools such as Stata, Python, R, or similar platforms.
  • Experience automating data cleaning, transformation, reporting and analysis.
  • Experience creating clear data visualizations and analytical outputs for non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, including attention to data quality and reproducibility.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with analysts, policy professionals, and other non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced policy environment.
  • Intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, humility, and commitment to high-quality, transparent data practices.
  • Desire to see Texas be the best place to live, work, and raise a family through 2036 and beyond.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with SQL and extracting data via APIs.
  • Experience using version control (Git or similar) for reproducible, collaborative workflows.
  • Familiarity working with public sector or socioeconomic datasets (e.g., U.S. Census/ACS, BLS, Texas state education, health or workforce data).
Location

The Data & Systems Analyst will be expected to be in the Austin office a minimum of two days per week, with additional in-office collaboration as needed. Additional hours outside of standard office hours may be necessary during business peaks, particularly during the state legislative sessions. Occasional travel within Texas may be required for project meetings or organizational events but is expected to be limited (less than 20%).

Compensation And Benefits

Texas 2036 offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The target salary range for this position is $100,000 – $120,000.
