Job summary

DataJobs in Austin seeks a data engineer to design and deliver integrated data solutions that support UT Austin academic, research, and administrative decision-making.

You will develop relational databases, gather business requirements with partners, implement data structures, and enable dashboards and reports for university decision-making. This is a hybrid role based in Austin with strong SQL, PostgreSQL, Power BI, and Tableau expertise.

Qualifications

• Ability to synthesize complex information into consumable insights using varied tools and techniques.
• Experience communicating with stakeholders in higher education or enterprise environments.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Develop, code, validate, and implement relational databases and integrated data structures for analytics
• Gather business requirements with functional partners and develop/refine business logic
• Work with technical partners to locate, clean, and orchestrate source data
• Translate and transform business logic into a high-scale database environment supporting descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics
• Enable consumable outputs including reports, dashboards, and other tools for university decision-making
• Design database structures that support meaningful data visualizations and interactive tools
• Apply data analytics and data engineering best practices, including:
  • Robust validation processes
  • Testing and deployment procedures
  • Data mining algorithms
  • Version control and code integration
  • Thorough documentation
  • Automation and streamlining of data processing pipelines
• Use creativity and flexibility to address new institutional data challenges
• Support special projects and ad hoc data requests as needed
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and also work independently to deliver data products aligned to university needs
• Participate in the data project lifecycle from conception through requirements gathering, design, documentation, development, testing, and deployment
• Communicate with partners and stakeholders to manage requests, expectations, and deliverables
• Provide updates on project status, progress, risks, and issues to drive completion
• Build and maintain an in-depth understanding of university data processes and technologies
• Handle confidential information with tact and discretion

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Strong technical expertise using SQL to query large databases, manipulate and validate data, implement business logic, and analyze data
• Excellent knowledge of databases, data flows, and data manipulation across operational and analytical contexts
• Proven ability to synthesize complex and/or ambiguous information from multiple sources into consumable insights using varied tools and techniques
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders in higher education or enterprise environments
• Proven prioritization and organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong written and verbal communication, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of professionalism
• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a higher education or research environment
• Familiarity with institutional data domains (student, enrollment, research, finance, HR)

• Experience supporting business intelligence or analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau)
• Knowledge of data governance, stewardship, and compliance in higher education
• Experience collaborating across decentralized organizations
• Familiarity with UT Austin’s administrative computing environment
• Experience with metadata management software

Compensation

• Salary: USD 80,000 per year
• Salary range: $80,000 + depending on qualifications

Location and Working Conditions

• Austin, TX 78701 (hybrid)
