  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain technical information clearly.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, clinical teams, and IT/analytics groups in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Formulates research questions to address challenges in radiation oncology.
  • Integrates data from health care sources to support research and strategic efforts.
  • Builds software modules to handle data communication protocols (e.g., DICOM handling, JSON data).
  • Identifies data sources, performs querying, cleaning, processing, validation, and analysis.
  • Uses database querying and visualization tools to extract, analyze, and visualize data patterns.
  • Synthesizes insights for decision-makers via reports and data visualizations.
  • Trains others in research design, statistics, and visualization techniques.
  • Supports clinical and translational research initiatives and quality improvement.

Radiation Oncology is seeking a Data Analyst to join our team. The Data Analyst provides analytical support for clinical, translational, and outcomes research within the Department of Radiation Oncology. Responsibilities include collecting, analyzing, and reporting research and operational data to support patient care, quality improvement, and research initiatives. The Data Analyst collaborates with faculty, clinical teams, Technology Services, Enterprise Analytics, and other departments to advance strategic and operational goals. Working under general supervision, the incumbent independently resolves routine issues and escalates complex matters as needed.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Formulates research questions to address and solve complex challenges in radiation oncology.

  • Integrates concepts and data from health care sources to create analyses that serve research and strategic efforts.

  • Builds software modules to handle data communication protocols in radiation oncology, such as DICOM handling module, json data handling module etc.

  • Identifies data sources; data querying, cleaning and gathering; processing and validation; statistical analysis and interpretation; and visualization.

  • Uses database query tools and statistical, analytical, and visualization software to extract, manipulate, analyze, interpret, and visualize data trends and patterns and uncover insights.

  • Synthesizes and communicates insights from research and health care data for decision makers through data visualizations, reports, and presentations.

  • Trains others in research design, statistical analysis, and visualization techniques

  • Other responsibilities aligned with our clinical and research initiatives


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Health Informatics, Data Analytics, Statistics, or related field; or equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in industry standard programing languages (python and SQL) and analytics packages as well as visualization software.

  • Ability to produce high quality, accurate results in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Ability to prepare reports for a variety of stakeholders in a cohesive and intuitive manner.

  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to explain technical and statistical information in understandable terms.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU


Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Health Informatics, Data Analytics, or related field or equivalent experience

  • Experience handling healthcare data standards and communication protocols such as DICOM, FHIR R4 JSON data

  • Familiarity with web application development frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, Flask, React) or business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)

  • Knowledge of cloud data architectures (e.g., Microsoft Fabric, Data Lakes) and clinical workflows within Radiation Oncology (ARIA, Eclipse, Epic)


Salary Range:

$75,000-$85,000- Commensurate with experience
